Just shooting with this combo. This lens is such an incredible treat! Shallow DOF dreamy Bokeh. Edge to edge sharp and contrasty from the get-go @ F1.4! Maybe this is a super 65mm F2.0?

It will sometime AF and face recognize and other times not. MF on the A9, of course, is well supported. An alternate is to MF in AF mode to approach the zone.

Mostly, you pick a focus point and fire bursts around it for animates (people mostly). There is No Other 105 F1.4 so itís the Nikkor for this effect. Not a cheap lens-something like $2200. Worth it because the ďnext upĒ lens is a 200mm F2.0.

Is it really that big of a step up from the 85 GM, which certainly eliminates a lot of the "trouble"?

According to Lens Rentals and my observations... it's worth the trouble:

EDIT: Roger is about the only person who's testing I trust.

I exchanged the Nikkor 85mm for this 105mm F1.4. I also have the Canon 85L (MKI) and EF 85mm F1.8. This is an entirely different level of quality.

I've been using the Nikkor 105mm f1.4 for the past week or so. It's the best portrait lens I've ever used and I've used the 85mm GM, Sigma Art 135mm, Canon 200mm f2L, Zeiss 135mm f1.8 ZA, Canon 85mm 1.2L, 135L....

That's the beauty of the A7 series. We are not tied to any brand when it comes to lenses.

I'm extremely jealous of the quality and options for Canon adaptors... 🤦🏼‍♂️. Until they get better I'm forced to run dual systems with a D850 along with the A7/9 body [im a resolution whore and haven't decided if I can settle for the A9]

This is the only lens I think I'd ever own a Nikon for.

I very much like the look of this lens. I always thought there should be a 100ish f/1.4 lens and I am glad that Nikon made this very nice one.

From personal experience, if you skip the Nikon 28mm 1.4E and Nikon 200mm 2.0VRII you're missing out!... Oh yeah, the 70-200 2.8E is pretty awesome too!

I've heard this lens is the it lens. I've got the poor boy version, the Nikkor 105 f1.8 MF.

105 / 1.4 = 75
135 / 1.8 = 75

The Sigma 135/1.8 | Art should provide a similar level of isolation, though I do think that there's something special about the 105/1.4E's rendering. Both are very sharp and well-corrected wide open!

Yes. For me, itís worth the ďtroubleĒ of keeping a Nikon camera (which isnít really trouble at all aside from having to maintain two camera systems).

Anyone compared the two lens yet?

Umm, the point is you donít need a Nikon with a Sony A9 ( and the like).

Depends on "need." The D850 has a higher resolution sensor than the A9, which some people (myself included) value for certain things. Also, It's not totally clear to me that 105's performance on the Vello's adapter A9 will be as good as native performance on the D850. I will find out how good the AF on the D850 is tomorrow when my D850 arrives.

I definitely want to try the Vello out, but I don't see myself putting the 105 f/1.4 on my A9 on a regular basis. One of the things I love about the A9 is the small size, and I've been trying to maintain that advantage by only putting small lenses on it. The 105 is certainly not small, though it balances pretty well on a D8xx series camera.

I love this lens but it sounds like AF on the Vello is hit or miss.

Understand that a version 5 of the Vello will be out soon.

Wonder how that will change things on the A7R III?
