p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · More than meh for under $600?

Hello everyone... I shoot concert photography as well as street photography. I've made the decision to go FX for wide and DX for long. Tamron 70-200 2.8 lives on my Canon 7D mkii. Recently acquired a lovely D610. I am happy, body wise. For the Nikon, lens wise, I have a 50mm 1.8D and a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8. Both of which I find... Meh. I want better. Probably gonna stick with primes for now. Can't afford a good 24-70 ish with fast AF right now, so I would like to find a prime no longer than 85mm that is a keeper. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Would like to keep it 2.8 or faster. Thank you

You say you can't afford a good 24-70 but the Nikon 28-70 f2.8 s a fine lens and with some looking should be able to be found at your price point. Love mine on my D600.

What about a used Tamron 24-70 VC? They're often available under $600.

The Tamron above or a Nikon 85mm f1.8G. I always buy used gear, either from ebay or here. I've saved thousands over the years.

Nikon 85mm f/1.4 D Lens. Fast for your low-light stuff, lovely bokeh, AF is not super fast (as in BIF / sports fast) but good enough for what you're doing. Used prices are right about what you're looking at.

By afford, I mean I can't afford a marked improvement in AF speed that would come in the form of the Nikon 24-70. My Tamron 28-75mm is good, but like my non-VC 70-200, I have missed some cool shots because the AF was hunting. I have rented the Nikon VR II 70-200 and the AF made me giddy.

85/1.4 D good, just AF seems not so good on my D610 at longer distance. AFS 85/1.8 seems a good deal.

I too have both 50mm 1.8D and a Tamron 28-75mm 2.8 (used both a lot in D700, but much less on my D600/610), and I actually don't find them "meh", although 85/1.4 is better.

85 1.8g
35 1.8g fx ed
get both used for around $650.00 total

or forget both, save a bit more. sell your 50.
and get a 58 1.4g for around $1000 used. now you have 50/85 in one lens.

What about selling your Canon and the Tamron to get a Sigma 70-200 OSM and add the Tamron 24-70mm?

How is the AF speed in low light on the Sigma?

Tamron 70-200 non VC is garbage AF. Almost anything will be better.

I love my 85 1.8G. Pair that with a 50 1.8G and a 35 1.8G and you have everything you need. Then swap out for 1.4G or Art series when you reach the limits of the 1.8Gs.

I'm very happy with my Nikon 85/1.8D...$300. But then I've never used any of the G's.

Bill, I can only tell you that the AF on the G models -- especially the 1.8G -- is brutally slow. I had the 1.8D and loved it quite honestly. Not many weaknesses

Okay, so to the OP --> I have a conundrum as well. And this is not a shameless plug, since neither of these are likely to sell easily on FM. But I can tell you from plenty of experience with the both, the Nikon 28-70/2.8 and Tokina 24-70/2.8 that the prices either sell for used is a BARGAIN. These are extremely good options for under, let's say, $750 to be sure.

My predicament is that I have to get rid of one of these, and likely will be the 28-70mm Nikon. When I say this is probably the cleanest 28-70mm copy in existence, I'm serious. I'm not sure it has been mounted and used more than 2-3 times, ever, and I've only had it a few days now. Anyway, unless the Tamon 24-70VR is consistently priced below $750 -- consider finding yourself a nice copy of either lens shown here
