p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Why no new 1.7x TC update, & 1.7x on 300mm PF?

Nikon updated the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters but not the 1.7x. Any ideas on why?

My reason for asking is I had the 1.4II and upgraded to the 1.4III version. It is noticeably better. I use it with my 300mm PF and see no impact on image quality. I was thinking of getting the 1.7x but am concerned if IQ will hold up. Note: I donít want the 2x as I have a 600 F4 if I need to go that long.

Any thoughts on the 1.7x on the 300 PF?

I can give you my indirect assessment and guess as to your question. I just sold my 1.7 (to be replaced shortly by a 1.4) but my 1.7 II was ever so slightly sharper than my 2.0 III. I think the 1.7 was likely the strongest of the version II converters so they saw less of a reason to update it. Mine was great and lonely sold so I'd have more space between the 2.0 and my next convert or...

For me I use it as follows:

200mm 2.0VRII - bare lens
280mm - 1.4 tc
400mm - 2.0 tc

I have the TC-14e iii and TC-17e , I find the TC-14e iii works well with both my 300mm PF and f2.8 wide open with a small but slightly noticeable hit in sharpness more noticeable on the PF . The TC-17e doesn't work too good with the 300mm PF imo , IQ looks fuzzy to me unless the object is very close , with the 300mm f2.8 I stop down to f7.1 for sharpest results and it works ok for short or long distance.

The TC17 has always worked well with the 300 AF-S f4. I can't speak for the PF version. It's pretty well known but I'll repeat it anyway...the TC 14 EII and III do well with about any lens you put them on. The 17 and 20 are at their best with the 200 f2, 300 and 400 f2.8's.

My TC17 works pretty well with my 70-200 f/4. I think of it as a convenience combo - I get a 119-340mm f/6.7 lens for when I don't feel like hauling my 150-600 f/6.3 S. It's not as sharp, but it's pretty good (and far better, for example, than my old 70-300 VR).

So I agree the reason they haven't updated it is probably that there is less room for improvement. Plus, I bet it's not as big of a seller -- you don't catch the people looking for the widest aperture (who would go for the TC14) or the longest focal length (TC20).

I had the TC-14 II as well, but I sold it. I rarely found situations where I would rather use the TC14 than the TC17.

Thanks all. I guess I will try a 1.7 and see what I think. I can always return it if it doesn't give good results.

The TC-17EII works quite well on the 300 PF.

I would definitely use it before uprezing an image taken with the 1.4x II TC.

Second shot is 50% crop.

Just an FYI, I paid $210 used on the boards for mine... and Amazon gave me $189 trade in three weeks ago for mine (after it didn't sell on the boards). Point is, consider it a $21 rental and enjoy. Very little downside at current prices.

I owned mine a year and only sold as I had the 2.0 and wanted more space between TC's.

When I shot film and was limited to ASA 160 the half stop difference between the 1.7x and the 2x teleconverters was important. Now with ISO 6400 cameras I have not needed the 1.7x. Canon never produced a 1.7x teleconverter and I would be surprised if Nikon invested in an upgraded version of theirs.

I use the TC17EII often, but not with the 300 f4 you ask about. Fantastic on the latest 300 2.8, darn good on the 200-500 too <---believe that, it's true with mine. I use it on the 500 f4G too, prefer the 14EIII on that lens.
