I am looking to replace my Apple Thunderbolt 27 Display.

Id like something at least 27, UHD/4K, and am willing to spend up to around a $1000.
Ill be using it with a 2017 MacBook Pro.

Recommendations?

Subjective question these days. There are too many monitors out there today that are more than fine for professional photography editing. I still prefer NEC.

BenQ just released the 27" 99% adobe rgb monitor that is 4K for about $1100. Looks very promising.

So did Dell. the price a little higher.

But what amoneline stated... we have lots of options.
as long as the monitor is an IPS with a switching speed less than 5ms.... you will be good.
This is just a starting point.

So a follow up question: how much difference is there using a 4K or UHD monitor?

Diane, we use an Eizo monitor with the built in calibration tool. Joseph uses a Henge Dock to dock the MacBook to it. It's a pretty brilliant monitor.

HP Z30i monitor that has a 16:10 ratio display that provides 100% of the Adobe RGB gamut. It sells at B&H for under $1,000.

None of the 4K monitors under $2700 are reliable and I do not need 4K nor do I want to deal with ultra tiny type fonts on the screen. The 16:10 ratio makes the 30" display taller than a 16:9 ratio 32" display and provides usable gains in real estate for working with a photo editor.

I bought a 32" 4k asus which is awesome. But I typically run it in downrez mode. 2560/1440 because I like to read text and have larger lightroom slider targets.

I highly recommend LG 31MU97C, it's Resolution is up to 40962160, and it's price is around 1000$. More information you can see here. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00OKSEVTY/

For weddings any calibrated 100% srgb monitor will do.
Consider these images will not be viewed or examined on Eizo monitors but mostly mobile phones or tablets at best.
LG 21:9 ultrawide monitors are best buy if you also do video work.
