A couple of more from me pretending to do birding

I didn't check his exif to see if he did. There's two places in the setup, Image Comment and Copyright, where I put it in all of my cameras (that have it, the D1h and D1x do not)

Nikon AF-D 2.8/180 wide open.

I really like that lens somehow.. More than expected. Surely far from perfect but much better and more characterful than expected.

Thank you very much, Luka!

Your great images with the 300PF were inspiring me to look for other (tele) perspectives in my garden, that is one of the results.

I am actually very torn between the 300 PF (and a converter) and the 200-500 for backyard birding (and dragonflying ) and compressed landscapes.. These are really the choices that I always wanted but never had when I tryed to use my Sony for everything.

Thank you back to you Yannik

While I can't say much abut 200-500 as I never even touched or have seen the lens in real life, I can say 300 PF hit the sweet spot for me. It is the size of 24-70, and weigh less. It is almost a bit confusing for it to be this light. Image quality is pretty good, but it really is the weight that is the major point for me. I do like going hiking, and while I would like to take a long tele, I do not want to be limited to have just telephoto either. With the weight of 200-500, I could not imagine taking any other lens if I went hiking with it. With the weight of 300 PF, taking a few more lens is not much of an issue. Currently, I do not own any wide angle AF lenses, but if I get something like 24/1.8, I can go hiking with 24/1.8, 58/1.4, 300/4 PF and that can make an interestingly unique and light AF lens setup. I was seduced by the idea of having the 'one lens that takes all wild life' 200-500, but honestly, I have not done much of wild life shots either. I can't even identify most birds around here. So, I decided that if I find myself leaning toward wild life shooting, I may consider 200-500 that time. Right now, I am simply interested in the different opportunity for composition and the quality of images that it can provide. If you go with th 200-500 route, we can compare our notes.

Luka

Well, when you get bored with D800, you can always play with D750 or D850

This morning I picked up a mint used 105 f/2.8 VR from a wedding/event photographer who has just moved to Fuji XT2 system. First few shots with this lens and I really feel I am going to love this lens. I am surprised how good it is as a portrait lens
