This species is rare in all European countries. In the UK, this seems to be only the second record south of Yorkshire. It grows on various dead trees. The brackets are up to 2cm long.

Olympus EM-1 (manual mode), Olympus 4/3 x2TC, Olympus 4/350mm f2 macro, f11 or f16 flash, hand-held.

The stereo is crosseye.

Very nice Harold. Congratulations on the find. Are these fungi considered mushrooms?

Thanks Birdie. I didn't find it. Some of the much more expert people on Saturday's foray found it and guided me to it.

An email which just arrived says that there have been a couple more finds within a few miles. Nobody knows why it is becoming a little more common in the south.

We tend to call them all mushrooms, mainly because edible species are to be found in all the major groups of fungi.

Very nice find! I think there are some spots in Finland too, where this can be found - at least some colleaques have pictures of this species.

Thanks, Rane.

There are a number of issues with reporting "rare" species. For example, I have a number of recently published books but have not found this one in any of them. Also, it is common for a mushroom species to have been moved around through several genera. How young or old the specimen is may determine whether e.g. its colour matches details in the books. Above all, not many enthusiasts are knowledgeable enough to recognise them, such that the published records can have more to do with where the specialists are active, rather than the true distribution of the species.
