Well walking down trails is mostly what I will be doing. I like to do lots of walking which is why I was leaning towards the 300, but that newer version 400DOII looks to be a contender as well.
Looking at what I can get 3002.8 with 1.4Ext and crop factor of 1.3 gives me around a 560 F4 lens or as far as a 400DOII with a 1.4EXt would give me around a 728, but then I'm back to a F5.6 again .

If I recall correctly the 400DOii is about the same weight as a 300 f2.8 so no real difference for trail walking - and with birds in the wild you will nearly always be focal length limited which means cropping no matter what the sensor size, and cropping accentuates noise. I would take focal length any time.
With the DOii you also have the opportunity for ~1200mm (on 1.3 crop) with a 2x extender.
