I read about the Kowa Prominar 500mm F5.6 on another web site (Guest of Jim Kasson). This is a spotting scope and you can purchase different mounting to make it a 350mm, 500 or 850mm. I took the plunge and purchased the scope with the 500mm attachment in Nikon mount. I really did not believe it was going to be a good lens but was I pleasantly surprised. It is really sharp wide open. I compared it on my Nikon D859 with my Nikon 200-500mm and my Sony A7RII at 100-400mm with the 1.4x at 490mm. First off I received it a day before I took a short work trip out of the country and did not have a lot of time but i shot at wood fence about 20 to 30 feet away. The Kowa blew away the Sony in terms of being sharp and more micro contrast, and was noticeably better than the Nikon. I did the tests wide open to f11. I did not have time to go through the f11 shots yet.

The Kowa is relatively inexpensive and is very light and you can basically make it a 350 to 850mm with the attachments. I have gone back and purchased the other two adapters.

The Kowa is manual focus and one thing that bugs me is the lens cap and hood cannot be attached at the same time.
It might be difficult to use this lens for fast moving events but I think it makes a really nice landscape lens. It is clearly sharp across the whole field. When i get back i will do more complete tests and comparisons. There is not a lot of comparisons using this lens and surprised by the lack of general interest.

It really is annoying when a lens cap and hood can't be used together. Can a filter be mounted on that lens?

Don't spotting scopes have a fixed aperture?

The Kowa Prominar was on my radar a few years ago. Some sample photos seemed sharp, but on low resolution sensors and it showed some CA. I just figured people didn't buy it because the new 150-600 lenses from Tamron and Sigma stole the show. It would be lovely to see some corner crops with high contrast.

I may have some of my Sony shots with me on this trip and will try to post. Yes there is a front thread so you can use a filter. Not a fixed aperture. 5.6 to 11.

Well, even if it was a great optic a manual 2kg 5.6/500 for $2000 doesn't seem that sexy to me. Does it focus internally?

Thanks for the link, Phillip. The lens actually fuels my desire for a Medium Format system. Longer that 300 has been difficult to find. Of course it will cover the sensor well since it comes with a focal length reducer to 350 mm.

Also interesting to read how good the Leica R 180/2.8 apo is on the GFX. I own that lens and love using it on my Sony A7rii. It is pricey, of course, but less so than it has been in the past (depending upon the version). I don't know why more folks don't use that lens other than price. Anyone know if the leica R 280/4 apo also works on GFX?

I'm in that bind on a couple of lenses I have where I can't cap it with the hood on - and I put a filter on those definitely just to protect the front element. The filter can always be screwed off for shooting if that's an issue for photographers who don't like to shoot with a filter. But, yeah, I get what you mean. Funky set up you've got, interesting.

Here are a few examples at f5.6 and f6.3 on the Sony. BTW I also tested mine on the Fuji GFX-- just nothing as long as a comparison but also sharp throughout. There is some vignetting on all the cameras. Not sure if the hood was affecting the vignetting but will check

What about the Canon FD supertele lenses?
I use the Canon FD 400mm f/2.8 L and 300mm f/2.8 L with modified 0.7x medium format speedbooster on the Sony A7II. So it should work on the GFX as well.
Never tested the FD 500 and 800mm lenses with the speedbooster, but I suppose they will work well too.

They are interesting alternatives, but I have a copule of reservations. Color correction is a priority for me. Old lenses tend to have less color correction than the best modern designs, and these problems increase exponentially in the extended image circle. I have tested the SMC Pentax F* 300mm f/4.5, which should be in the same class optically, and while it covers the image circle, the CA becomes excessive in the corners.

I should also specify that I am intersted in long but slow, and 500mm f/5.6 is nice in that regard compared to f/4.5 even though the FD lenses are weight effective at that aperture.
