p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 50mm options for D850

I currently own the 50/1.8G which has produced good images for me on my D810 - perhaps even very good, but not at the level of my 85/1.4G for instance. Now that I've switched to a D850, I'm considering other options, such as the Sigma 50/1.4 Art.

Can anyone who has used the 50/1.8G on the D850 share any insights on other options that offer a step up in image quality ? As early days with the D850, I haven't seen any lens comparisons or tests, but if mistaken would be interested as well

Thanks

Mark

I've owned and shot (on the D800E), the Nikon 50mm 1.4G, 1.8g, and 58mm 1.4G. Without hesitation I'd say pull the trigger on the Sigma 50mm 1.4 Art. OR, I'd wait for a Nikon 50/58mm 1.4E (could be years).

EDIT: No, not shot on the D850 but not a huge linear bump in resolution and from what I've read and seen, the same should hold true when shooting on the D850. DJR has shot these on the 850, might bug him for his opinion.

The Sigma 50 Art is a superb option on the D850. I have the 50/1.4G, 50/1.8G, 58/1.4G and 50 Art. My pick is both the 50 Art and 58/1.4G for the different styles of rendering. I will post some shots later in the D850 resource thread taken today with the 50 Art.

@Charles.K: The 58mm f/1.4 works well with the D850 (I have asked someone else before, I know ;-)?

The 58/1.4G works superbly also on the D850. It is a specialty lens and I love this lens. When I am after the percentage shots the 35 and 50 Art are superb work horses, particularly if you spend a some making sure the calibration profiles are accurate and you can then rely on the face/eye recognition with AF-C AUTO mode. This saves a lot of time. Also with more active/dynamic portraits, I suggest 1/3xFL as a minimum. My shot was only 1/2xFL and should have been marginally more.

I'm in the same boat right now, considering the 50mm options.
Got to say I'm probably getting the d850 soon as well.
So far had the old 50mm 1.4d which was neither bad nor great on the d800.
Probably a little better on my new to me d750.
I do have the 58g and like it for it's rendering on both cameras, but it is not as sharp
as I would like it to be in some situations ( calibration might be not ideal here I have to admit).
Anyway - the Sigma Art would be perfect if it was just a bit smaller and lighter.
I did also consider the new Milvus 50mm 1.4, which probably has the nicest bookeh of all those
lenses together with great sharpness, and of course Zeiss microcontrast, but it is even heavier than
The Sigma, and doesn't have AF, which seems quite useful in this specific focal range.
However somehow I would prefer a smaller, lighter and a little cheaper lens for travelling also.
Perhaps there is not the perfect 50mm in the Nikon-world for me?

The 58/1.4G is an unusual lens in that wide open it is great for portraits, but marginally stopped down it is very sharp. Two months ago in Spain, this was my walk around lens with D810 alongside my 24/35 Art. The 58/1.4G is compact and light and makes for a superb walk around lens if you are a 50mm FOV shooter Some shots from the streets of Pontevedra and Mojorca.

As an all purpose lens the art is probably the way to go (if you don’t mind the weight).

I compared a few 50mm lenses on the D850 here:

I have the 50mm f/1.4G currently and my copy is very sharp wide open on my D850. I’ve compared this lens with the 58mm and sadly the 58mm wasn’t as sharp wide open. The sweet spot on the 58mm is f/2 and up. I want to go back to the Sigma 50mm Art because is is so sharp wide open.

have you noticed the extra light that the 58 generates

I shot two sessions with the 50A so far.
#1 50a d850
two nights ago.
I was consistently close to my subjects and I was fairly happy with the results
only had this one rig on me.

#2 I was rocking two rigs
not as impressed with the 50a from last night.
105e d750
50a d850

I wasn't close enough to my subjects, when using the 50, I think that is why I'm not as impressed with the results from this session
there wasn't any character from the images at all. bokeh is boring.
far too sterile.

I have two gigs today
I think I may leave the 105 at home
I may use 50a on the d750 and 70-200e on the d850 or vice versa

-

It takes a few sessions to really get a good feel for a new lens like this.

Yeah I think I saw that light difference yesterday at Precision Camera when I was testing the two together. I have a 58mm on order, but I’d have to sell my Nikon D810 to buy it. Not sure if I want to just use one body, but I kind of did that when I was using the D810, I didn’t have another body to use. Part of me wants the 58mm badly, the other part is scared to sell the D810. I may sell it since it sits in a bag and doesn’t get used. I can always get another D850 later in the year. As it sits, the D810 looses value. The shutter count is 18,678. Fairly low. My 50mm f/1.4G came from a good batch, it’s sharp and images look good.

My opinion is that for most people - the D850 is too expensive to own two - at this point.

D850
And the smaller D750 for travel.
Nice combo!!

I was thinking the D750 would be a nice backup

+1

This is why I have the D850 and Marisa has now adopted my backup D750 as hers. There are no further discussions as she did not gel with the Fuji XT2 or the X100f.

I have all 4 lenses. The 50/1.4G, 50/1.8G are really good lenses. Light, small are excellent in every respect assuming you have very good copies.

The 58G and 50 Art I feel are both superb lenses and both have the feel and style unique to their design. The 50 Art is sharp, but does not have the heavy micro contrast as in a lot of Zeiss lenses so I really like it for portraits. Much the same reason I used the Leica M lenses. The 58G is a chameleon, beautiful rendering and can be very sharp.

I find all of these lenses just amazing and being a 50mm lenses shooter I keep them all, particularly since Marisa love the 50/1.8G on the D750.

Shots with the 50 Art medium to distant.

Is the Tamron 45mm f/1.8 competitive? Close enough to 50mm to be considered in same range. It would be nice to have that VC. It appears to be on sale right now for only $399.

Today is the last day with the $200 instant rebate. I am about to pull the trigger but haven't read any reviews pushing me over the edge yet. I am shopping one for my D7200 however. So far, the bokeh is onion like. Fringing at wide open. Sharp at f1.8. Slower AF speed but sufficient. Is a step above Nikon 50 f1.4g and a bit below the Sigma 50 art.

Thanks everyone for the feedback !

I went to my local shop and traded in my 20/2.8 and 50/1.8 for the Sigma Art !

Fantastic lens, shoots great wide open and across the range
