p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · The Goldilocks 50

Those who know me know I've had a comical journey of finding the right 50 over the years. I've owned four (not a typo) 50L's, a 1987 50 1.8, a current 50 STM, a Canon 50 1.4 and two Sigma 50 1.4's. Two of my associates have 50 Arts and I've spend some borrow-time at weddings and the weight is just too much. My favorite 50 is the ZA 55mm for Sony but I'm not migrating for one lens [though I might end up shooting Sony one day for reals].

The Tamron 45mm 1.8 VC caught my attention when they dropped the price from 600 to 400USD a month ago. After three weddings, I might've found my 50 (at least for now). The AF is not whip-snap but it's accurate. It's very sharp wide open and has a great bokeh, rendering and transition from sharp to OOF. CA is there, but nothing like a 50L (purple) or a Nikkor 58 (green) and is easy to remove. Crazy bonus — all the latest gen Tamron primes focus REALLY close. It's practically a macro. To my eye it's as sharp as the 50 Art, weighs a lot less, does super close focus, and the AF is reliable. Just right.

Tom found a 50 — alert the media.

In Nikon-land, @DJ R picked one up as well and has been putting it through its paces.

I made a thread about the price drop and, without knowing much about how it performs, I do think that $400 is a more appropriate price. How are you getting along with the 45mm FOV? I was thinking it was weird and kind of one-of-a-kind, but then I remembered that Sigma makes a 30 Art for APSC, which for everyone but Canon is the same FOV.

Ben, I wish it was a 60 but 45 is quite workable. They say 43mm is 'normal' so ...

If they drop the price of the 35 1.8 VC to 400USD, I'll buy one in a heartbeat.

We also have the 85 1.8 VC and it's quiet nice. Focus is a little hit+miss but focuses closer than any other 85 and the images are lovely.

Tamron. Who knew?

my favorite "50mm" lenses are actually 58mm lenses. There is just something special about that focal length for me.

I had it for a few weeks
It is a decent lens IMO
the bokeh can, at times, be onion skin.
the VC def helped. I recently looked at images on my 70" hd tv, using my amazon fire tv. there is an app on there for smugmug. so at times I go through some galleries that I have set to private, comprised of work from diff lenses.

I was really pleasantly surprised when I was reviewing the shots from this lens when compared with a few other lenses, ON THE D850
the images from this lens were sharper and had good pop.

it may be worth the look.
most clients don't care about onion skin bokeh and ca.

Wait, you are talking about camera lenses. I thought you were talking about age. Carry on.
