How did you decide / gauge your focus? I assume you are in hip / stealth mode. Center point, manual pre-focus distance or

Can't quite explain it ... but I kinda like it.

Thanks Kent! On my Olympus Pen F, the rear screen is the kind that swings out, so I'm composing as best I can looking at the extended rear screen as I'm walking. My focus is center point. If you asked me if I saw this as I shot it, no way. I was kind of experimenting with shooting while crossing in a crowded cross walk, taking a number of shots. Viewing my results later on, this was the only one that made sense to me. Accident or serendipity, unknowable.

Things happen so fast on the street that serendipity does play a role. More often than not, you end up with photos to delete. In this case, I liked the claustrophobic feel that I ended up with, plus the lady with the defensive arm posture in good focus.

Pulled right into the scene. The contrast of thin vs full-bodied adds interest.
I probably would not have kept this image, feeling it was too random, but it does engage more than I would have expected and deserves keeper status.

Most appreciate your impressions Scott. Hadn't thought about it but "thin vs full-bodied" is a most astute observation. Even the stripes on the street are full bodied.

the arms crossed of course raises questions, adds interest as well
I am feeling fat....maybe why the full/thin aspect resonated with me
what is it about this scene that drew you in?
what do you think was conscious vs unconscious?

Claustrophia and the crowded nature of NYC streets is what drew me in. Where I live in Greenwich Village, at times there's so many people traveling about that it's hard to walk on the sidewalks, not to mention the streets where bicyclists and ubers and taxis, cars and trucks are all competing for space to move.

Not to mention the anxiety! I would need Scott's professional help on a daily basis if I lived there.

Not sure why this one works so well, but I do find it appealing and it captures the true essence of city life.
A little motion blur on some feet might have added to the hustle and bustle.

I'll stick with my mountains, waterfalls and furry critters though, thank you very much.
I'd have to get a second job just to pay for Scott's services.

Thanks Dave!

Revealing and understanding the unconscious is one of the keys of success to taking better street photos.

Much opportunity for study and consideration, yet it isn't so "busy" that you can't digest it.

It almost seems as though the crowd has parted a private lane for her.

OT a bit, but speaking of "fine" things ... your TOP 15 is pretty sweet.

Back OT ... a possible crop.

Bob and Dale, your comments much appreciated. And Kent, always learn from your personal touches and tweaks.

Thanks Kent, sorry about the OT, happens every time. The crop definitely simplifies the image, but for me, the humongous heals need seen. Perhaps crop up to them, or crop some of the dead space from the sides and make it more vertical? Just a thought. I do like the image though.

Yeah, those HEELS on the left do make a play. Certainly more than one possibility. Just kinda depends on what / which aspects you want to present.

Thanks Ben. Kent and Dale presented two great crop suggestions. My inclination is to crop right below those clunky heels.
