p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Safe to buy D750?

Hello,

I am a hobbyist, heavy GAS sufferer (check my profile!) and recent dad...

Being a recent dad means less travel opportunities which make my Canon FF + L lenses kit overkill. I never warmed to Canon files, use the system because it is rugged and reliable.

I am on the verge of selling my complete Canon kit and 16MP Fuji-X bodies and consolidate on a new generation 24MP Fuji body...

Thing is, on a whim, I bought a mint Fuji S5 Pro for next to nothing...I am considering buying the 85 f1.8G and 20 f1.8G for it.

Then I toyed with the idea of buying a FF Nikon body in the future, if I miss a FF DSLR.

I am attracted to the D750 because of weight, flippy screen, manageable files and decent price. But got scared because of the reliability issues (shutter).

Has the problem gone away with recent bodies?

Thank you all for your help, WBR,

João

Don’t be scared of D750s. They’re great cameras and this forum is filled with satisfied owners.

Relax The D750 is a superb camera and its sensor is still one of the best around. If there is an issue with a shutter even if you buy used Nikon will fix it.

Don't believe the internet megaphone. The VAST majority of people with a D750 will never have an issue.

I recently bought a new D750 while in Japan, thinking that the shutter issue only affected US models. Unfortunately, it had shutter issues too. In all honesty, I was quite annoyed at having to send it off & wait for repair. BUT now that it's fixed, I'm in LOVE & haven't had any issues since.

I've been on the road for the past 15 months with a D750/D7200 combo and had no issues, I bought a refurb special for S1399, a no brainer for a sensor of this calibre. I'd advise renting or going to a store at least, to handle it, as the body is like an FX version of the D7200. I personally dislike the ergo (prefer the D800 style body) but put up with it for the sensor and weight while traveling.

Why not buy a D800? If you are a new dad( suckerrrrrrr / congrats) why not get a camera with high resolution? I’m not getting into a megapixel debate but you can’t go back in time to replace those baby moments. My wife goes on groupon, we print canvas of the kids. Most of the images were D4 or X-Pro -1. They all look very good at 36 x 24.

My first camera was a D80 in 2010, I should have bought a D700. A D800 vs a D750 is a comparable price.

I went from APS-C to a D750. It is a fantastic camera, and the flippy screen comes in more handy than you think!

Seriously though, haven't had any shutter issues at all. The thing to remember is that the majority of people who have a great experience with it aren't making noise. The only people who go out of their way to make noise are people who had a problem.

Between my wife and I we have owned three d750's...and while they have been back to nikon for the recall, we never experienced any flaws with any of them. I wouldn't hesitate in getting one because of these worries. Great camera, a real good value 'do anything' body.

I've never bought a D750 brand new.

Just check here...

https://www.nikonusa.com/en/service-and-support/service-advisories/

...if your potential new camera is affected by the well known quirks of the D750 (shutter and flare). If possible, even if you are sure of the serial number, buy it from a store who has a good return policy, and basically that's it. I've done this for the 2 D750s that I own, 1300€ each here in France. And the last one had 10K actuations only.

Very safe...mine was serviced after 2nd advisory was expanded earlier this year.
It's been rock solid for 3+ years

Thank you all for your inputs.

I might pick a used D810 as there are plenty on offer from the D850 migration.

Can I have some feedback on weather resistance of the 20 f1.8g please?

WBR,

João
