For those that have experienced the lens costing $2600 why dosnt it focus sharp at 200?
Or is this a copy to copy issue?
Thanks

I’ve rented it 4 the mes for big shoots and I would bd up at 193nm every time. Not sure what that’s all about but even at F4 it’s a issue

That’s crazy for $2600 lens
Makes me want to get a Canon 200 2.8 and a adapter

the 70-200 is one of the few lenses that TDP tests out and compared to the 70-200ii by canon, an extremely competent lens, it looks nearly that level:

https://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=1137&Camera=1106&Sample=0&FLI=3&API=0&LensComp=687&CameraComp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=0

it's more than competent, no doubt about it.

it's main issue is cost for performance.

$1300 Tamron 70-200 g2 has it beat:

Now this is over about 4 shows at about 80k in images. It’s really bothersome . Each show I start off at 200 and I wind up about 193mm. Love to hear a explanation for it. My only thought is the focusing mechanism and elements may shift at the end of zoom

Dan, can you please post a sample or two? Mine seems to be fine and I posted plenty of images at that setting.

Don’t have it but only hearing complaints
But if I get it it better be sharp at 200

Small link correction for the sony vs. canon. This is both at 200.

Some years ago i had a similar issue with a Nikon 80-200 AF zoom when used at the MFD at 200 MM. The lens was incapable of a sharp 200 MM image at MFD. Live view manual focus didnt help much. Moving the lens focal length a bit towards say 195MM produced additional sharpness. Many folks said Nikon repair did not know why this model did that. Possibly this G lens has a similar behavior .

Is it possible that you used the exact same copy of the lens 4X, Guy? If you rent it from the same company, it is possible that they sent you the exact sub-par copy each time, I guess. They didn't do it deliberately, of course.

Ah, OK, the impression I got from your post that it was your hands on experience. My bad .

Joshua very possible but you would think maybe 10 in stock to rent out. I’m really baffled by it. I’ll keep trying. I’ll ask Roger to hand pick one for me in January when I need it.

If it's us, chances of getting the same copy on a repeat rental are maybe 1 in 60 or 70 for the GM. If they're more than 6 months apart, way less than that.

Yes, I realize that the odds of that happening are indeed slim.

Let me preface my following statement by the fact that I haven't done any actual testing of my findings/impressions but consistently seem to get similar performance in like for like scenarios.

In the time that I have used it, my images appear to be much sharper at 200mm when the subject is at closer range and is relatively static. It appears to have much more trouble with resolution/sharpness (in my actual shooting) when the subject gets a little further away. Think waist up versus full body/environmental to get an idea of the distances.

Again, I have not done any actual testing to verify this. But this is one of the things that I have been finding to be a reoccurring theme with the lens.

i my happy new user of that beast!!

After some test (no something special) my copy seems to be very sharp at 200mm.

But my problem is the zoom ring is a little bit stiff and before purchase the i had read a lot of reviews and everybody tells that is very easy and comfortable.i don’t care about that but i want to ask you if at the future have some problems?is it possible..How about your zoom ring?

thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english

I have this setup and LOVE IT. MC-11 and Canon 200mm 2.8 I wish it would focus a little faster and a bit more accurate. But in good light its great. This is on a Sony A7II
