p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Fruiting Bodies of a Physarum Species

This group of slime moulds have large concentration of calcium in the outer layers of their spore capsules, forming a white crust. When this cracks open at maturity, revealing he dark brown spores inside, the appearance resembles a sugar-coated chocolate treat. When the spores have gone they look more like dried flowers.

I think this is a different species from a similar one whose images I posted recently.

EM-1, Schneider HM40 reversed onto Kiron x1.5 TC, f11, tripple flash, hand-held with support.

The stereos are crosseyed.

Very cool. Although I have talked about slime moulds in lectures for years, it is only recently that I have really looked at them.

Thanks, Ed.

Many of them, such as Physarum are spread out like an array of wind turbines. At a magnification where DOF is about zero, this means some compromises. Stacking specialists might find them a worthwhile subject..

I found another Physarum species yesterday, looking more like golf balls on tees.
