DxOmark: FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM, Highest-rated wide-angle zoom
DxOmark says the new Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM lens is a the highest-rated wide-angle zoom ever tested.

"The new Sony FE 16-35mm lens reaches new scoring heights in the category of wide-angle zoom lenses, as well as a category record score for Sharpness — both when compared to other E-mount lenses and to what is possible with high-end lenses for other mounts. When shot on the Sony A7R II body, it scores 42 Overall, with a Sharpness score of 34. Obviously some of the strength of its results is due to the quality of the Sony A7R II body we used for testing, but it requires a top-of-the-line lens to bring the best out of a top-notch camera body."

Looks like they managed to snag a good copy for testing.

I'd pay a big premium ($3000) to purchase their test copy or another known excellent copy. See my long-lived and unloved WTB post. https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1507642

LensRentals' optical bench differ on the results. Perhaps the 16-35GM performs better at closer distances?

The big question is... how many copies do you have to try to get a good one?

A good marketing campaign by Sony might be "buy five, get one sharp"

It is a easy to tell a bad/good lens from milc platform but not always from a dslr. This is why we see many oof threads in canikon forums

That's fine if you live in NYC and can walk into B&H and sample all of their copies until you find a good one.

Where I live, I have to order any gear I want, and it takes a week or two to get to me (plus the same amount of time - and cost - shipping back a return). It takes a long time and a lot of money to separate the rare good Sony lenses from the bad ones, which is one of the main reasons I gave up on Sony.

Pretty insane results, my copy is so good though. I didn't think it would beat the Canon by that much

Out of the lab, realtime MTF is often better with higher precision system platform that defined by MILC not DSLR.

Doesn't surprise me one bit. This is the best WA zoom lens I have ever used. I'm also gonna buy a lottery ticket today as my copy is bang on perfect.

If you copy is indeed perfect, it's already worth $3,000!

Your comments get weirder every time.

My DSLRs deliver. My A9, too. I recommend workshops showing you how to get sharp images with DSLRS. Not that difficult.
