p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon convert 24-120 f4 ?

Leaning to jump ship to Nikon....Feel the camera is a tool and looks like the d850 is a great tool...doubt Canon will even be to that standard on the next 5d..

Is the 24-120 F4 in real life the optic equivalent to the Canon 24-105 F4 in terms of picture quality. The Nikon shooters I know are using the 24-70 which I am sure is amazing. I use my 24-105 a lot, IMHO it is the perfect walk around focal length and produces great images even though people bash it. I understand everything has a compromise on all equipment.

Thanks for any insights...

Had one and it was fine. Got the Sigma 24-105 f4 A and like it better...
build wise AND wide open IQ thru out the range.
Great FX walkaround.

The 24-120 f/4 is an excellent lens in real live shoots and it is excellent on the D850.

My good friend uses the 24-120 f/4 on the D850 for weddings along side the 24/1.4G, 35/1.4G, 58G, 105E and 70-200E. The 24-120 f/4 is proving to be excellent for videos with the image stabilization. He finds a lot of his clients expect some videos clips alongside his shoot.

Here is a link to a D850 review by Nasim Mansurov and there are many 24-120 f/4 images:

Also there is a link by Nasim on the 24-120 f/4 with the D810/800 and D3

I don't know anything about the Canon 24-105, but your other statements suggest you have an understanding that there's more to "lens usefulness" than raw performance metrics, so I don' think you'll be disappointed with the 24-120VR which has a good reputation as a "walk around"/general purpose lens. But if you ever decide to push the D850 to its limits, this is not the lens to do it with.

I love my 24-120 on my D800E.
Performance drops a bit at 120mm but otherwise it's a fine lens.

The only lens I have left haha. I do travel / landscape photography for personal enjoyment, print, and exhibits, plus paid events on occasion. This lens does a good enough job with all of this that I really don't feel like I have to spend thousands on more lenses. Instead, I'll rent a lens from time to time if I know I'll need to do something the 24-120 won't be suitable for.

The 24-120 F4 and the 70-200 2.8VR2 have lived on my d750 for 3+ years. Both of those take care of most of my shooting needs

I used both the Canon on a 5D III and the Nikkor on a D810. I much preferred the Nikon 24-120 over the Canon.

I switched from the 6d to the d750 and the 24-120 is just as good as my 24-105 Canon was and I even like it better for a few things.

I use the 24-120 f4 VR, have for years. Very useful focal range, I currently have 2. I really like and recommend the lens for general purpose to serious photography. Seems fine on the D850 too.

The link Charles.K dropped (do read them)- the reviewer suggests CA, but neither of mine have ever shown any.

Trench suggests the 24-105 Sigma ART. I've read a lot of great reviews about this lens, but I have never used the lens, for two reasons; I don't buy off brand lenses and the zoom is backwards (opposite twist) to Nikon.

I am still seriously considering the 24-105 Art as there is a cheap used one available but it is 25% heavier. Marisa my wife loves the D750 more so than the Fuji XT2 and has the 50/1.8G most of the time. The 24-120 f/4 is great fit for her too as it is at the cusp of weight/size tolerance.

I have the Sigma 24-105 Art for my D800e and it is the best of the bunch.

Second place goes to the Canon 24-105L on my Canon 5DsR and 1Ds3. I also successfully use this lens on my Sony a7R and a7R2, something I can't do with the Nikon mount AF zooms.

From tests I've seen, the Nikon 24-120 is the weakest of the three and of no interest to me.

I really feel you need to test the 24-120 f/4 lens and see if it suits your style of photography. This afternoon we have been testing with D850, D750 and D7200 for portraits with a dual SB 5000 flash umbrella/softbox and the 24-120 f/4 is performing superbly. That said I am also picking up a used Sigma 24-105 f/4 Art tomorrow for streets/travel specifically for the D850. I have also used the 24-105L extensively with my 5DII but I never really liked the looked of the images. It is possible that I had a weak copy of the 24-105L.

I've owned all three lenses and agree with above, my 24-120mm VR is my everyday walk around used on D800e/D750. I found the Sigma was no better, it's bigger and heavier and has a 82mm thread. The canon was the weakest of the three, but hey it could of been sample variation.

I have found the term "sample variation" one of the best catch all phrases around for issues that really cannot be defined.

I have a variable of said phrase that can be appropriately added/used: "sampler variation". it brings in the many unique "human factors" into the "review" process that can have an affect on an opinion of a product/person/other.

The good news for the OP and anyone else looking for a 24-120VR is that you can find mint used copies right here on FM for less than 40% of new.

Bought Nikon 24-120 F4 as kit lens with my D750. It is OK lens but nothing special, it will not disappoint but also never wow you. It is a kit lens after all.

While 24-70 2.8 is not as versatile it renders much better than 24-120 f4.

I beg to differ. it does better than most. and no it not a kit lens per say. that's right it not as versatile and its rendering is great but we all have to balance how we do our jobs. I have seen plenty of "nothing special" images come from both.
"it will not disappoint but also never wow you" and I always thought that was the job of the person behind the lens.

mines set up to head out of country in 2 weeks for 2 weeks.
