Used to do a lot of surf photography with my DX format D2X, in particular in HSC mode, despite the reduced file size (6,8 megapixel compared to the original 12,2 megapixel) because of the higher fps and 'extra' (virtual) crop (2x vs the normal DX 1,5)
Gladly upgraded to the D3 shorly after its introduction, even if that cost me the 'normal' DX and 'extra' HSC mode because of the much better IQ, in particular over ISO 400
Did try the DX crop on the D3, but the 5,1 megapixel file IQ was pretty bleak at best compared to the FX files
Got a D800 shortly after its introduction in 2012, but by that time had shifted my photographic interests away from surf photography
However did do a shoot in DX mode, just to see how it would hold up to the D3, even if I had to shoot with a lower fps (not that much though, used to shoot surf at 7 fps on the D3, while the D800 maxed out at 6 fps in DX mode)
Results were satisfactory, although not spectacular
Looked like this (with apologies for the bad post processing, still was struggling to find the 'right' settings at that time)

Can't recall ever using the D800 in DX mode again since though
Find the optional DX crop in particular on a high megapixel FX body convenient to have available 'just in case' but prefer the much better IQ of FX over DX (I have a 2nd hand D7100 as an inexpensive 'grab and go' DX body lying around, so have enough relevant experience with a more modern, compared to a D2X, DX body)
