p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Looking for depth of field information

Macro rookie here looking for information. Is there a source or a formula, that one can determine what the DOF will be with different lens/combinations or is it determined more by trial and error? As an example, A Nikon 200 f/4 micro bare...same lens with a PN-11 tube...same lens with a 50mm reversed...same lens with a 20mm reversed. Same scenario with a Nikon 105 f/2.8 micro. I am looking to find the movement that should be used for each step. Using .050 seemed to work OK with the 200 and the PN-11 but not sure if that is the desired setting. Thanks for any suggestions and/or sources for learning.

There is a calculator on this page for number of steps required.
