p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Zion and Horseshoe Bend

Hey Folks, So I'm taking a trip out to the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Horseshoe Bend. I have a Nikon D700 and need a full frame lens to shoot those locations. Mainly a "landscape" lens. I've been using a 50mm but have noticed in my travels that I NEED a wider angle lens. I was looking at a 14-24 but not sure if that's the best option.
Looking for advice from you guys so I can make the most of all opportunities and get the shots I want.

Thanks in advance!

The classic Nikon choice is the 14-24 f2.8 but I use a 17-35 f2.8. I find that 35 on the long end allows for a little more variation in composition but the 14-24 is optically superior, I think. (You can also find the 17-35 in rough condition on the cheap if you're willing to wait and look, I scored mine for under $300)

Not a Nikon shooter, but on my trip to Zion, the 17-40 f/4 lens stayed on my camera most of the time. Specially when walking "The Narrows" at Zion. I think the 17 - 35 mentioned is a good choice.

You wouldn't go wrong with the 14-24mm. If <16mm isn't a priority, check out the Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8. The Sigma 12-24mm Art is another option, but it's f/4 and is much harder to find used - new, it'll run roughly twice the price of a used 15-30mm.

My Tokina 12-24 f4 plays well in canyon country on my DX D7200, so I think an 17/18-35 would be ideal on FX. Certainly lighter and cheaper than the 14-24. The Tamron 15-30 is intriguing though.

14-24 is what I have. 16-35VR lens is another option. At horseshoe bend you can do a vertical pano with a not so wide angle lens to get a wider perspective.

I don't see any special lenses needed for any special locations. I would advise always having at least a wide, normal and medium telephoto.

If you are planning a trip to Zion and Grand Canyon in the near future, be forewarned that Zion is very crowded. I was there a week ago and the river area was too crowded for me to even stop. I shot some on the East side beyond the tunnels to Checkerboard but even that area was very crowded with most pull offs totally filled with vehicles. I left the park within a few hours due to the overcrowding. I have been advised by rangers that the crowds do not thin out for several more weeks. Weekends are worse, of course, but I tried mid week.
