"Don't bother me when I am eating lunch."
I was surprised by the sheer number and closeness of the Bison in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. I saw them in Casey Springs on Camp Pendleton many years ago, but always stayed in the car. In Estes they were everywhere, including in the middle of the road, unimpressed by the crowds trying to photograph them.
Cheers,
John

Great image. Are you sure this was Estes Park, CO? That is one of my home bases, and I have never seen a bison there.

Very nice pose, colors, and sharpness. Alerted by Kim, I searched the wildlife reports for Estes Park, CO, and found no mentions of bison. However, bison are a prominent feature of the landscape near Jackson Hole and nearby Yellowstone, behaving as you described. Regardless of location, the photo is beautiful.

By the way, I live near Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, CA. It is a huge area, and until your post, I had no idea there was herd of bison there. Online reports state the Marines protect the herd, which was a gift from a local zoo about 40-50 years ago and steadily growing. Artillery practice is carefully conducted so the bison aren't hurt. I wish a civilian like me could get in there to photograph them, but I'll either have to go to Catalina Island or back to Wyoming/Montana. Thanks for sharing the info.

Great shot of a majestic-looking bison. Really weird, blotchy-looking background.

FWIW, there is a large herd, supposedly over 1,200, in Custer State Park, SD. They have an annual roundup on the last Friday in September that is open to the public. And if you want to take one home, there is an auction in November.

They pretty much go wherever they want. Visitors are strongly informed that they can move much quicker than one might imagine, up to 30mph in short bursts, if startled. You certainly don't want to get between a mom and her calf.

I do not think it is too difficult to get onto the sprawling U S. Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton. Contact the Public Affairs section or find a USMC photographer who can escort you. Casey springs is not always open due to live fire that occurs lower. At the top there is a small lake and great Bison. It has been 35 years since I was there.
I hope you can photograph them. I saw Bison in Yellowstone too as well as in the Jackson Hole area, but now recall not in Estes Park. Processing 1000 photos confused the location. Thanks to Kim for pointing that out.

Background is a mixture of Sage and grass, with some small flowers.
