With DX sensors improving at a rapid clip I am on the verge of dumping my heavy D800 and humongous 14-24 (and even more space consuming set of Fotodiox ND filters for the 14-24) for a D5xxx or D7xxx. There are plenty of good lens options in the midrange and on the tele end, but the WA range is giving me some pause. On the D800 at least 80% of my images are with the 14-24!

Looking at the available options I am converging on the Tokina 11-20. I occasionally do night photography so the f/2.8 will come in handy. It seems to have good sunburst performance, which I use with some regularity. It also seems to have pretty good flare resistance in moderately backlit scenes, particularly wrt the Tokina 11-16. Purple fringing is not good but that is easily controlled in software, and some copies seem to have de-centering issues so one has to buy something with a warranty to guard against that possibility.

Is that my best bet? Or is the Sigma 10-20 3.5 something I should also consider? The new Nikon 10-24 is too slow on the wide end and the older 10-24 is just plain too expensive for what it is,

Thx

I tried the Tokina 11-20/2.8 three times and each lens had some problems. I bought a 14-24/2.8 and it just worked- color, contrast, sharpness, etc ... When I went back to FX, it was even better.

Drop the filter and just shoot, There isn't a DX body and lens combo that will beat the D800m and 14-24 combo for landscapes. The D500 is decent but I haven't seen people dropping FX for it unless they shoot wildlife.

You could get the tokina 14-20 and I dont think you’re missing a beat even relative to full frame glass. Same with the sigma 18-35. If those aren’t wide enough for you, I’d go tokina 11-20 or 11-16, or even for the new Tamron 10-24, which has vc.

I had the 11-16/2.8. I use the Tokina 11-20/2.8 I find it to be one of the best lenses in the DX field.

I LOVE my Tokina 11-20mm. Had the 12-28 f4 but needed better low light. That lens is wonderful. I highly recommend.

No way am I dropping NDs, they are an important part of my shooting. I agree about the D800/14-24 combo. Nothing in DX land will beat it, it has served me well over the past 5 yeras and I am nowhere near outgrowing it. However, nowadays there are plenty of things that come close. If I drop 1lbs in filter weight, 1 lb in body weight, 1 lb in lens weight, and $3000+ in future gear cost (when the D800 needs to be replaced if it dies on me) the tradeoff starts to look compelling.

I will order a Tokina 11-20 and see how things go with my D5500. Worst case I return it.

14mm is not nearly wide enough for me on DX. I shoot A LOT at the 14mm end on FX. And I like to spend as little time in PS as humanly possible so routine stitching is not really an option I would like to entertain.

I just got the Tokina 11-20 too. So far...is tack sharp at wide open..as sharp as my Sigma 18-35..that's no joke. It gets a bit softer when shooting at the MFD. That's about it.

From today....

I've been really happy with the tokina 11-16, although like you say, you have to watch flare. So I'd think the 11-20 would be great. I read a really good review on it the other day

I looked closely but alas and alack, I was forced into the Tammy 15-30 because it has VR. Had either come with VR I would have bought.

Necro bumping my own thread with a follow-up question... I did end up buying the 11-20 during the recent price reduction. Overall I am satisfied with it, though in comparison to the 14-24 it is rather dull and UUUGELY prone to flare, to the point where the images are not usable without taking two shots with the sun blocked in one. After this type of gymnastics it is not bad

I am noticing that when I edit images taken with the lens in PS the correction profile does not auto load. However, the moment i manually select Tokina as the lens make it auto recognizes it as the 11-20. Is there a work-around? Doing this for every image is getting rather old.

I didn't think is that bad....I am somewhat surprised that even the frame has the sun in it, the sharpness and contrast didn't get degraded at all. Just some flares.....

Looks good to me.
Just don't forget the Nikon is 4 times the price of Tokina and accepts filters (82mm though).
I ordered mine last night.
