In past years, the Red-breasted Sapsucker has always drilled his holes in the White Birch trees. So far, this autumn, he has picked a couple of trees that have rough brown bark and oblong red berries, where he is drilling. Don't know the name of the tree. In addition to a bunch of wasps feeding on the sap from the holes, are a few Anna's Hummingbirds.
A Black Squirrel and a Grey Squirrel are harvesting acorns from nearby oak trees and busily burying them or stashing them elsewhere.
The Steller's Jay also know that they only have a couple of weeks before the trees are stripped of acorns. They usually pick off one acorn at a time, then fly to a sturdy branch, where they place the acorn between their feet and peck off the covering to eat the seed inside. More experienced ones can find acorns on the ground, and pick up two or three, which they can stash in their cheeks and fly off to eat them in peace.
