https://www.dxomark.com/nikon-d850-sensor-review-first-dslr-hit-100-points/

The D850ís key strengths are its outstanding color (Portrait score) and dynamic range (Landscape score) at base ISO where it again ranks as the number one among all commercially available cameras weíve tested for these attributes. Offering outstanding dynamic range of 14.8 EV and color depth of 26.4 bit at base ISO, combined with its massive 45.7Mp resolution, the D850 is a mouthwatering prospect for landscape, studio, portrait, as well as high-end editorial or advertising photographers who are seeking top-notch image quality for large-scale reproduction and display.

Its low-light ISO (Sports score) of ISO 2660 doesnít quite live up to its other scores, but itís still a very acceptable result, and taking into account sensor size, resolution, and resulting pixel pitch, the D850 fairs pretty well for ISO performance.

Kinda disappointed in the small IQ increases from the D800 (from 2012) tbh, this doesn't feel like 5 years of progress. If it had 1 stop more DR and 60MP I'd have bought it perhaps.

I have a feeling sony's successor to the A7rII might be my next camera.

Very impressive and congratulations to Nikon on their 100th anniversary!
Having had the D850 since its release, it is a superb camera on so many levels and worthy upgrade from the D810. Still it is early days and I am looking forward to all the software updates for Lr CC/PS

Nikon hits 100 on DxOMark's score in the same year of their 100-year anniversary

Mark,

The D850 is not about greatly improved sensor technology. It is about the marriage of Nikonís best sensor with itís best camera features (AF, Tilt screen, ...). If this combiniation is not what your after you are smart to pass. But for many of us, this is perfect.

If you use manual focus lenses, on a tripod, and take one frame at a time, I agree, stick with the D810 or even the D800e.

Computer processors hit a speed wall ten years ago, which lead to multi core/multi threading along with more efficient processors.

Likewise, camera sensors have gotten so good that they're now focusing on read out speed/throughput along with dual pixels etc. I for one am estatic we're at this point.

the camera is best available for consumers who have unlimited funds, and also the best choice for professionals, for example wedding shooters.
if funds are tight, a d750 will get the job done and then some!

while the D850 is king for 99% of us, it is not THE BEST choice for those who are on the sidelines, shooting sports for a living. For them, a D5 is still best. this would be a nice backup camera for those shooters though!

I'm still waiting for someone to actually test the film conversion/scanning mode...
That is going to be the decider for me.

There are so many things NOT tested by DXO that their silly overall score has minimal meaning to me. The raw data, though, an be helpful/interesting. The D850 clearly has a very nice sensor.

Iím still waiting for them to test the sigma 135mm F/1.8. I donít know why thereís such a heavy delay on testing that lens....
but congrats on the D850!

I really want one of these, but not sure if I'll ever take it with me on my travels due to the size.

It is and they will sell more because of it, I'm just disappointed it didn't stay the IQ monster camera that went after medium format.

hope you're not as disappointed as I was. I was lucky I was shooting on their dime. that camera needs a little work along with the A9.

While I don't use manual lenses, I do use the very best single focal lenses with AF. I use a tripod about 90% of the time. My plan is to keep the D800E until the price of used D850 goes below $2,000, which I think is possible in the next 1.5 - 2 years. I'm not in a hurry. For the current Nikon price of $3,200 I could buy a really nice Chamonix 8x10 camera.

What's interesting to me is that the D500 has slightly better per-pixel performance - seems like there'll still be room to keep releasing better sensors. I bet that difference is from bumping into some physical limitations like electrical interference and heat dissipation that's more pronounced on a larger sensor, so the major future improvements may come from the surrounding components rather than the sensor itself.

Really impressed with the fact that the D850 seems to have pulled off DR throughout the ISO range to rival the D750.
