This species is unusual in that it is the only one I have come across which populates both sides of a leaf. These sporangia are of a shape which is failry distinctive but it has many other forms and colours. This was from the same location, a mostly Sweet Chestnut woodland, where we also found a more-confusing form:

I had to rush these shots and I was not happy with the lighting but the key features are shown.

EM-1, Olympus 4/3 50mm f2 macro at 1:2 (1:1 with crop factor), twin TTL flash.f16.

Thanks.

Today they are darker, more brown. Also, as is correct for the species, the tips of the capsules have each developed a +/- disc-shaped, blackish area. Images will be posted.

Thanks, Tom.

Photographing them is one thing, identifying them is another matter, certainly beyond genus. A fellow enthusiast found blue capsules recently. I am fortunate to go out with a group of fungus specialists.

There is much talk in the UK, recently, of lack of excercise for retired people. I carry up to 10kg of gear, walking for miles.

Good to see you back in the forum.
