I completely understand why it is a challenge even with the D500 but the shots are great. I wouldn't mind them a little darker, well, the darker parts a little darker that is but can't say for sure, on a MacBook Air right now so din't take my words for it!

Thanks for the comments everyone. I discovered that the best AF mode on the Nikon was actually Auto AF (not 3D). I used to have that mode disabled but I tried it and it did amazingly well for these fast flyers. The Canon system had big problems with this type of work....none of the AF modes really got the job done but I did manage a few with the 1DX2 in small zone mode.
