Hi All,

I've been shooting basketball and volleyball in less-than-ideal lighting with a 1D MkIV and the Canon 70 - 200 f/2.8 V.II @ ISO 6400. Two stop exposure adjustment and some hefty noise reduction in LR work ok, but it's not ideal; faces lose detail. i'm considering moving to the A9 and I'd like to use my Canon lens (with the latest Metabones adaptor, whichever one that is). And shooting at ISO 12800. Anyone had good or bad experiences shooting BB and VB with this combination? I understand that the fps drops to 10 vs. 20, but I can probably live with that.

Thanks,
Merrill

action and adapted lenses just dont work well. I dont have the a9, but a7rII, and the Metabones and 70-200 2.8II. for stationary and slow moving ok. not for fast moving. furthermore ability of focus adabpted lenses is very much light dependent. So, its a no go.

The A9 focusing system is a step up from the A7R2 and recent updates are improving non-native lens AF. I think the only way to know for sure is to rent an A9 & adapter and try it out for yourself. I will say if you get the exposure right 12k ISO looks pretty great!

Although I don't have experience with the A9 yet - I just switched from Canon to an A7R II...
having used the 1DX, 1D IV and 70-200 extensively for college sports, I'd highly recommend upgrading to a used 1DX for their price point for sports. Again I can't speak to the A9 - but that pro size body and the 70-200 II combination just simply is incredible for basketball. I'd often shoot it for volleyball too. I was comfortable with ISO to 10000 (to achieve a 1/800 or 1/1000 shutter speed typically at 2.8).

Doesn't answer your question well, but my sports experience with Canon was great so feel free to message me about any of that for questions.

A used 1DX would be the least expensive way to go. I shoot VB/BB in similar conditions (8000 ISO, 2.8, 1/1000) and the 1DX is very reliable in those conditions. If you are thinking about the A9 I would stay away from adapted glass for indoor sports. I think you will have far less frustration be staying native in the Sony system.

I can't speak for the 70-200II, but the 24-70II focus very close to a native lens on the a9. There are people using long Canon whites on the a9 with a lot of success

The a7rII's AF performance with adapted lens is not representative of how they behave with the a9. The PDAF system on the a9 is quite a bit better than the a7rII, which is why it is able to focus with adapted lenses so well. I shot a wedding a couple of weeks back with the 24-70II on the a9...low light and all, it worked like a native lens. Eye AF with adapted glass on the a9 sweetens the deal even more.

that may be so. I dont have the A9. however, the function of 24-70 2.8II is far superior to 70-200 2.8Ii on my a7rIi, esp on the wide end. I wuld certainly not call it canon equivalent for tracking. but simple shot AF is very snappy and instantaneus. not so much with the 70-200

Worth renting a combo for the heads up on the Metabones V green (blue led) and your lens.

Adapting Canon branded lenses on the MB IV/V and MC-11 are both hit or miss. Some work beautifully and others not so much. The 70-200 II happens to be one I had to get rid of due to multiple copies not being able to achieve focus outside of the central area (about 60-70% of the frame). Outside of that area, my copies just hunted back and forth to no end.

I first experienced this with the A7R2 which is why I sold the first copy. After picking up the A9, I tried another copy and again found that it behaved the same way which is why I ultimately went with the GM for that particular focal length need.

FWIW, the 200/2.0 and 50/1.2 also behave like the tele zoom. The 85 II seems to go a little further out from center but still doesn't make it out to the edges.

That being said, there are a slew of other EF mount lenses that work perfectly. All of the Sigma Global Vision lenses except for the 150-600 have worked beautifully. The Canon 35 II and 100/2.0 I still have focus all the way out to the edges on both the R2 and A9. With the update to the A9, they now also both eye-AF in the respective green modes on the two adapters.
