p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D850 Mega Landscape Lens Test

A few years ago I tested a long list of Canon lenses on the 5DSR to see which performed well across the frame at infinity for landscape shooters. I'm doing that same test for my D850. I don't have nearly as many Nikon lenses as I did when I owned the 5DSR but I'll test the ones I have. I'll add more as I have time to shoot and process the images.

Here are the results from my 50mm lenses. All shot raw and converted to DNG to process in LR. Exposed for the trees so the sky is clipped and should be ignored. For MF Zeiss lenses all were focused at infinity hard stop. For AF lenses I focused at each aperture in LV via CDAF. Exposure delay mode + electronic shutter in LV used on all. Exposure adjusted in post (lowered by 1 to 2EV). Sharpness setting is 45/0.7/45. These are full-sized 45MP images.

Very hazy subject. Can I really tell anything at all here?

Evaluate trees at the center of the frame, looking at the sharpness.

Edit: I lowered the exposure by another 1/2EV to make the sharpness easier to evaluate.

Added the 24-120mm. Surprisingly good performance across the frame between 35mm and 70mm (24mm is a bit weak at the edges) - not exactly to the level of a prime but much better than expected. Edges are noticeably weaker @ 120mm.

Added 70-200mm f/4 VR. Edges are a little weak @ 70mm. At 100-135mm my copy is decentered, with the left edge softer than the right. I'll be sending the lens off to Nikon to address this.

Added Zeiss 10mm Makro-Planar. Lens lives up to its reputation - it's incredibly sharp across the frame, even from f/2.8 - edges get progressively a bit sharper up to f/4 to f/5.6. I believe I misfocused the f/2 shot a bit - it's softer than it should be. Infinity focus is a bit short of the hard-stop so focus is a bit tricky to nail.

Yeah, I was going to say you have an issue with your 70-200/4... Mine's sharp corner to corner. But I also generally stop it down a bit more than f/8 though, and for a distant view like this, especially midday, I almost always use a polarizer.

Also, ignore things that can be fixed in post, like CA on some lenses (while others are hopeless). Because if two lenses for all practical purposes produce the same in post they're effectively fungible.

Finally, it's important to evaluate lenses "turned up". By this I mean processed to your visual preference - I'm currently shooting for a lot of high-saturation, high-structure processing (think old RVP Velvia but without the squashed shadows), like this shot taken at Bryce (though this was shot with the 24-70, midday, with a polarizer, D800E):

Sometimes lenses, especially low-end budget ones, have weird color shifts that prevents images from being processed to taste. This is definitely important to take into account for evaluation.

I agree Jan. I did that with my 5DSR thread. I might go back when I'm done testing the lenses and do the full treatment on one image from each lens. In the meantime I made sure to export high-quality jpegs for the full-sized images I posted in case anyone wants to perform their own additional sharpening and adjustments.

Added Tamron 24-70mm VC. Edges are a bit soft at 24mm, get better at 35mm, and become very good at 50-70mm.

Added Samyang 14mm. I have a very sharp and well-centered copy (took about 5 attempts to find one). Edges get progressively sharper, reaching their best sharpness starting at f/5.6. Lens has significant field curvature so technique requires focusing for the edges, which produces acceptable results in the center as well.

Added 14-24mm. Due to heavy field curvature from 14-16mm I've presented both centrally-focused and edged-focus images (right-edge used to focus). At these focal lengths the edges suffers for centrally-focused and vice-versa at f/2.8. By f/4 the edged-focused images yield the best balance between center and edge acuity.
