By "private rail line" do you mean "not owned by JNR" or whoever its successor might be?

that is correct, there are more than a few private lines not operated/managed by JR

its been quite awhile since it has been referred to as the Japan National Railway

"In 1987 the Japanese government privatized the debt-ridden Japan National Railway (JNR), which had run Japan's national railway network since the Meiji era. The JNR lines were divided into eleven smaller regional Japan Rail (JR) companies."

there are now 7, down from 11

and they all work together for the greater good and highest efficiency.

Very nice. I notice the "grab knobs" on the edge of each aisle seat. How thoughtful.

Yes excellent images. Wish the US railway system was as efficient as here and Europe.

Our politicians don't believe in public transportation. And even when we try, we usually do a really lousy job, although the Los Angeles subway seems pretty nice. It has taken over 30 years to build the first phase (just four stations) of the Second Avenue Subway in NYC. The rest of it will probably never be built and if it is, it will take 50 years to complete it. The Chinese seem able to build a new train line in the time it takes us to repair an escalator in a subway station, but the Chinese government doesn't need anyone's approval when it decides to do so.

I ran across some maps online of proposed extensions to the NYC subway and I really had to laugh because it would take literally trillions of dollars and 100 years to build if it could be built at all, which it probably couldn't because there would be legal challenges by people who wouldn't want it in their neighborhoods. I guess we'll have to wait for transporters.

I agree!^^^^^^^^^^ Here in DC the Metro is a cluster fxxx! Down more than up. New extensions going to places that are not in dire need of a new extension or rail line. Pushing people to the extreme suburbs that do NOT have the road infrastructure to support the new hundreds of thousands of new residents heading into DC
But heh, build those new roads to clog already overloaded beltways and interstates....forget the rail lines and subways
