I certainly have not seen or used many or the lenses mentioned here - my best is the Zeiss 135 f2. Absolutely great across it's whole range.

I have to agree on the Leica R apo-Telyt 280/4. A great lens.

Runners up include the Voigtlander apo-lanthar 65/2, Leica R 180/2.8 apo elmarit, Sony 100/2.8 stf, and Loxia 21/2.8

My favourite, today, is one of the least optically 'excellent' lenses, one with heaps of aberration and character, the Leica Summilux-R 1.4/80.
In a technical sense it's probably a piece of crap but I love the images I get from it, all wide open of course, all glow-y and fuzzy, except in a few spots where it matters.
I took this lens on a recent rip to shoot architecture and realised what a piece of shit this lens is outside its sweet spot, people

Well John, why don't you tell us what you really think?

Some folks in the Leica camp consider the LEICA SUMMILUX-R 80 mm f/1.4 the finest portrait lens ever made. It's certainly one of my favorites.
The designer WalterMandler https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walter_Mandler was very creative in his use of technical lens defects to create a pleasing specialty portrait lens, used WO.
I find the lens sharpens up nicely when stopping down to f/4 and I consider it useable for landscape photography at f/5.6 or f/8. What's not to like?
True, it can flare considerably when used on an A7rII.

Although I don't use it a bunch, the 50lux ASPH is perhaps my all time favorite (on a digital M body).

Also, I must have gotten an amazing copy of the Minolta 85mm f1.7. It shocked me with its beautiful rendering and sharpness even wide open or, should I say, especially wide open. Heavy but great build.

Head over here. There are images from M 240s, M 262s, MM the new M 10, film Ms and a lot of other Leica's and Leica, Zeiss, Voightlander and many other M mount lenses.

Just drop in here and have a look around.

It's a lovely lens. I actually prefer the wide open draw of the Minolta to that of the Summilux-R 80/1.4, minor bokeh swirl and all.

It's a love-hate thing. I've had the lens since the early 1990's and have used it professionally over the years and on a number of different cameras. It's definitely a great lens and very sharp as you say. It is certainly one of the great portrait lenses and this is the way I've been using mine over the last couple of years and I love it for that. I'll post a few recent pics later, both good and bad.

It may not be the sexiest choice, but I would pick the Canon 100-400L II. Built like a tank and works for portraits, landscape, wildlife, macro, sports, etc. It is very sharp and has beautiful color and contrast and nice bokeh. Image stabilization letís me shoot hand held at 400mm and 1/25 second. Yep, best lens ever and Iíve owned and shot with a ton.

'60mm f/4 attached to my Fuji GA645i'. I agree and would add the wide angle of the Mamiya 6 triple set - the 50mm f4.

The Minolta 85 1.4 Limited has the most delicate tonality and smoothest bokeh of any fast 85. The CY 35 1.4 is my other favorite. The third would be the Contax g21, and unlike the first two, isn't massive...

I really love these too, but not the greatest:

Loxia 21, rx1 sonnar, pentax 31 limited, zm 35, Mino 58 1.2, r80, Contax n 85, Contax 100 f2, ZA 135.

The Zeiss Sonnar 35/2 of the Sony RX1, no doubt.

I think the best lens I have used is the Leica M 50 f/2 AA and it is among the smallest I have used as well. I love the sharpness and consistency of that sharpness across the frame. More importantly, and what I was most surprised by, is that I really like the bokeh from this lens in almost all situations, aperture settings, and background distance. What I probably like most about the lens, however, is how free it is from colour aberrations. Any two of these three things would be fantastic, but to have all three together is such a small lens makes it the best lens I have used.

Other lenses that are also among the upper echelon that I have used include:

Zeiss Loxia 21 f/2.8
Zeiss Otus 28 f/1.4 APO
Zeiss ZM 35 f/1.4
Zeiss Otus 55 f/1.4 APO
Hasselblad HC 100 f/2.2
Zeiss Milvus 135 f/2 APO

Other lenses that I would love to try that may be the best lens ever include:

Leica R 180 f/2.8 APO
Leica R 280 f/4 APO
Zeiss Otus 85 f/1.4 APO
Coastal Optics 60 f/4 APO IR-UV
Contax 645 120 f/4 APO Makro
Nikon 105 f/1.4
Canon 200 f/1.8L

Almost impossible to answer as there's so many great ones. I'll go with the latest versions of the Canon & Nikon 200mm f2.

I am with you, telyt, and others with regards to the Leica APO-R 280/4.
Not perfect, but simply stunningly sharp already at f/4.

Not far behind, but more versatile, I consider the Leica Vario-R 105-280/4.2.
Another one of my favorite lenses.

The Olympus 180mm f/2 ED, of course.

Honorably mentioned lenses for me would be:

Zony 55mm f/1.8
Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4
Canon FD 85mm f/1.2L
Contax 21/2.8, 28/2.8, 45/2, 90/2.8.

In the even more "alt" realm, my Schneider Angulon 210mm f/6.8 with it's massive image circle is also a "best".
