p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · 70-200 broken glass

Hi,

Anybody knows if this can be repaired:

My 70-200 Canon lens (non-IS) fell on the ground and one of the glass inside broke - it looks like only the top most glass got damaged. You can see the picture here:

http://www.pbase.com/reneg/inbox

As you might be able to see from the photo, the metal frame is a bit bent too (just above the word "LENS"). I can put the lens cap on it, but you can tell, by the way the lens cap goes on, that the metal frame is not perfectly round anymore.

1. I assume the glass can be replaced. Is that correct?

2. How about the metal frame around the lens, can it be fixed?

3. If anybody knows the approximate cost ( for the damage that is visible anyway)?

It's not under warranty anymore.

Thanks.

Rene

I dont believe that CPS will fix as it is too old....you will have to check with other repair shops.

It might be cheaper/better to buy an new used 70-200 non-IS, or go for an upgrade. IF Canon will repair this old lens, it's going to cost a ton.

You might find an independent repair shop, however. This was very popular lens and tens of thousands were made.

Is that the f/2.8 or the f/4?

I did something similar to my f/2.8 a few years ago and it cost me half the price of a new lens to fix it. Norwegian labour rates didn't help, but it's an expensive fix in parts alone.

It's the 2.8.

Thanks for the data.

And my local camera store wanted $50 just to get a quote on the repair.

The EF 70-200/2.8L is a current product. It is still available new, and it is still serviced by Canon.

Forget about the camera store you went to and contact Canon Canada in Mississauga. They will give you a quote for the repair. Note that as of April 2017, Canon Canada changed their service fee structure. The minimum charge is $350 cdn and if the repair is more, Canon will let you know and how much.

Yes, I might try that first.

Sun Camera, on Steeles Avenue will give me a free estimate too.

I have no affiliation with Sun Camera, but I did find them fair and reasonable on repairing a 70-200mm f2.8L IS focus motor and aligning a 24-70mm. For a while it's my understanding Canon Canada sent them work too.

The real issue is if that front element is protective or something more complex. You're at the mercy of the price of the actual part from Canon, which any shop will have to order, unless they can scavenge another 70-200mm.

You might just look for another 70-200mm used.
