Hey guys,

What are some of the smaller telephoto lenses for a7rii that can be adapted (since I dont think the sony FE lenses are that small (85mm 1.8))? Ideally f2.8 and faster

The M-Hexanon 90/2.8 and the Sonnar G 90/2.8 both work well with the A7RII. The Sonnar C/Y 100/3.5 is small, light, and excellent but doesn't meet your f/2.8 and faster criterion.

The Sony 85/1.8 FE weighs only 371 grams, so it won't be much if any heavier than an adapted lens + adapter, but it may have a wider barrel.

Review of Zuiko 100/2

Review of Summicron M 90

The Summicron review also talks about the soviet Jupiter-9 (clone of Zeiss Sonnar). The Canon LTM 85/2 lenses can also be found, and I think a beefier construction than the Jupiter-9.

You can also look for a Bokina

From what I remember, the Minolta Maxxum 100mm f2 is pretty small, and can be autofocus with an LA-EA4 adapter

Canon EF 100mm F/2:

AFs quickly and precisely on both Sigma MC-11 and Metabones IV. Canon's 85mm F/1.8 is a mirror image of this lens in every possible way, too, if you want something a hair shorter/faster.

Obviously you'd have to factor in the cost of the adapter, but these are great suggestions.

A refurb MC-11 directly from Sigma can be had for $189, and the lens for $350-400, so around $550-600. Drop $50 for the 85mm.

Just measured the lens/adapter combo, and they're roughly 4" x 3.8" and 1.25lbs. Using the MC-11 drops 0.10lbs.

The smallest which comes to my mind is the Olympus OM 2.8/100. It is just 230g and smaller than many 1.4/50 lenses. It is sharp from wide open with decent bokeh. Doesn't set any records but neither does it have any real weaknesses.

My go-to small 100mm is the 310g Minolta MD 2.5/100 which is a really good performer.

You may find 2.8'that are clearly smaller, but good luck with f2, even 2.5. the Nikon 105 f2.5 was quite good, but longer, just as heavy and slower

You are seriously underestimating the Fe 85

In case you like over corrected spherical aberration bokeh you should think about the Accura Supertel 85mm f/1.9. It is rare and small.
I have most likely a copy, an even rarer Wirgin Edixar:

OM 85mm f/2 is same as OM 100mm f/2.8. They are the smallest you can get, but the coatings are older...

Contax g 90mm might have better coatings, color and can get af adapter.

Leica M 90mm 2.5/2.4 is similar size. There is also Sony 85mm 2.8 with less 60cm mfd which is very light. When you consider the adapters, I think the lengths will be similar for most of the combinations, but the difference is the girth of the lenses.

The Olympus OM 85/2 & 100/2.8 lenses and the Rokkor MD 100/2.5 will also autofocus with the Techart PRO adapter.

I would still go for the FE 85 1.8 as it isn't massive or that expensive but is very good.

That said, there are plenty of options but if you add an adapter you change the size. For instance the Nikon MF 85s are smaller but maybe heavier but adding adapter isn't that much different.

The hoods can make a seeming difference (I will always use a hood with both the 85 and 55 1.8s).

The Canon EF 100 f2 is also a nice lens but the FE 85 1.8 has rendered mine to being used a LOT less (and mainly on M43 now).

I had the Sony A mount 85 2.8 SAM and that is also very light but needs an LA-EA# which again, changes the size.

There isn't a huge difference between most of these.

I was scrolling to the end looking for this suggestion, the Sony A SAM 85/2.8 is generally considered to be same optics as Contax 85-90/2.8 with lesser coatings. Single copies side by side showed performance to be close but edge toward the Contax. It's also among the cheaper AF options, lens can be found for $150+ and LA-EA3 can be found for 125 or so.

I once had the SAM 85/2.8 + LA-EA3 adapter, and together they weighted 330 grams on my weight scale. The Sony FE 85/1.8 weighs 371 grams according to Sony specs, so the weight difference is minimal. I think that the Sony FE 85/1.8 will outperform many older adapted five or six element lenses, while being reasonably priced as Sony goes and providing good autofocus.

Do we really know that the contemporary coatings of the Sony SAM 85/2.8 are lesser than the Zeiss T* coatings that existed 20-40 years ago, depending on choosing between a Contax G 90/2.8 or the C/Y Zeiss 85/2.8? After all the Zeiss T* coating will have evolved over the years.

Canon, I believe, has the smallest 135/2 with their nFD lens. It's nice, too. Good wide open resolution, better corrected than the Nikon AIS 135/2, but not as well corrected as the EF L, but the difference isn't huge. Nice built in hood, too.

The Oly 85/2 is a small lens, but the boke's kind of squirrelly and flare correction was poor on my copy.

The APO-Summicron 75/2 is a little gem and it focuses closer than most 85's, so it ends up with the same magnification at MFD. Pricey, and there are some field curvature issues with it wide open that may or may not bother you, but I wouldn't be without it now.
