Can someone compare these two lenses based on:

AF speed
AF accuracy
Colors
Build quality
Value

I don't want to buy both. And the focal lengths are close enough that I feel like I can cross-shop them. The 85 would most likely be easier to build a wedding setup around (16-35 Canon, native 35, Batis 85). But if the 55 is better I might reconsider.

The Batis and 55 are both extremely fast and accurate AF.

Batis has better build quality

The 55 used is a great value, but so is the 85.

If you already have the 16-35/35 I would go Batis for sure. I love mine.

No question having a 35 already in your kit I would go 85 . You need a more portrait length And the reach of a 85. There both very good st IQ. But if it was me buy the 55 and Sony 85 1.8 as its half the cost of the Batis and just as good. 600 vs 1200 dollars plus you can get a 55 used off the board for maybe 650. Thatís the price for two lenses at 1250 compared to the Batis at 1200.

Plus you get a extra backup lens in the process

But if you want to go used, you can pick up the Batis for $800...so it makes it very close to the Sony 85.

With the 55/1.8 ZA, you will see noticeable onion ring patterns in the specular highlights and more axial chromatic aberration. (LoCA). It focus a bit faster than the Batis 85/1.8.
The Batis 85/1.8 will give you more contrast wide open (and micro-contrast) and less color aberration. The bokeh balls are not as rounded towards the edges though.

Both are outstanding at f/4 across the entire frame. (including extreme edges)

All in all, two great lenses with great characteristics and minimal flaws. 85mm is my favorite FL for shooting people.

+1 to what Fred said. But personally I'm finding I prefer 135 for portraits, so my preferred setup is 35/50/135.

You mentioned weddings -- I think for weddings, 135 is all the more useful since it allows you to be farther back and out of the way.

If you're strictly focused on 55 vs 85, I'd also agree that 85 would make more sense given that you have a 35.

For what it's worth, I took a well lit iso 100 picture of my wife using the sony fe 85/1.8 on the a9 and pixel peeping might as well have been a medical dermatology exam, hard to believe there's a need for sharper lenses out there!

I own both lenses, here's how i rank them.

AF speed: 55 1.8
AF accuracy: batis
Colours: batis
Build quality: slight edge to the 55 1.8
Value: not sure if i can rank this, but would suggest buying used for either one.

Imo, the batis has better AF accuracy, although the AF is a bit slower. When shooting at f1.8, the 55 has more noticeable CA.

Both are good lenses. The 55 is smaller and lighter though. I personally prefer the batis.

I say just buy the lens that fits your shooting style. No matter how hard you try, you will not like a lens if the focal length is not your ideal/desired focal length. Use the the focal length you are comfortable with.

get both. use mine exclusively on wedding days for photo and video, and they just kill for color and image quality.

Mostly, yes. I'll still own a 5D4 and some Canon glass.

But I need/want a smaller setup and some new-tech goodness in the form of an A7III

I agree with what most have said above. 55 Focuses faster, though I've found both to be accurate. For what it's worth, I sold my 55 after I got the Batis because I wasn't using it anymore. Still a big fan of it, though.

Maybe what I'll do is buy the Batis 85 first (new) and then try and source a used 55

I have both. I use the Batis more. The 55 is a great "if I can only take one" lens but if I can make the Batis work then that's what I'll use everytime. In my personal experience I've found the AF, build quality, colors, and contrast to be slightly better on the Batis. Yes, even the AF speed. The only downsides are size, "football" bokeh wide open (uncommon in my shots, but it does happen), and distortion.

Respectfully, and without getting too off topic, I do see a difference between the Batis and the FE 85 1.8. That said it probably isn't a $600 difference to most people. I probably wouldn't have bought the Batis if the FE had been available but now that I own it I'll probably never sell it (unless Zeiss releases a 100mm f/2 Batis...maybe then). It is an excellent lens.

I have to agree with this. Ever since the FE came out people have said it is just as good, or images look the exact same as the Batis. I tried both, and very quickly decided I liked the Batis better.

I like the 55 very much, but I would choose the Batis 85 over it without hesitating.

On the a9 the 55 1.8 the AF is extremely impressive. In terms of AF, the 55 1.8 is faster than the FE 85, which is faster than the Batis 85. You can shoot dogs running around WO and track super well with the 55. I found it better than the 70-200 GM I rented for that.

I found the color on the 55 to be a bit more subdued (a little more luminance and less saturation) than the Batis 85, though I find it a tricky lens to process. It seems to have a magenta tint (aside from LoCal). I have owned and shot them both, but not compared, but I would guess the bokeh on the 55 ZA smoother. When shooting the Batis against other 85s, it was very contrasty, rushing to black and blowing highlights more quickly.

I didn't like the Batis in terms of rendering. I would go ZA 55, and pick FE 85 over the Batis for portraits and shallow DOF. The Batis is for landscaping and all around 85.

I have both and they are both excellent and super sharp. I agree with others that I've heard the Sony 85/1.8 as a great budget alternative to the Batis. For events, I'd go with 85mm over 55mm for the reach. If you shoot with the A7rII, the 55mm can be cropped to around 85mm (f2.8 DOF) and still shoot 18MP stills though. For my personal use, I typically take the 55mm out.

'the bokeh on the 55 FE smoother.'

Consistently true, I believe, quite an achievement in such a lens. Yet one see great images from the 85/1.8 in the Batis thread, so perhaps not a fair point if it can be easily worked around.

In general, of two fine lenses go with (i) the one you use most, or (ii) the lens from which more important images are expected. Both have cheaper alt lenses in the system, so choose where you go for a lower priced lens with due consideration. Such lenses tend to stay around and may lead you to miss some great images.

I have both. I find myself using the 85 more, it's a better length for portraits, it pairs better with extension tubes for what little close up work I do, and the LoCA is considerably better controlled. 55 might be a hair sharper. I still think I need both though since I have no standard zoom and sometimes 35 is too short and 85 is too long. The 55 makes killer stitched panoramas for landscape work.
