We get this species in our for a couple of weeks or so each year. They wait for the Ragwort, which we tolerate, to mature so they can lay their eggs. The moths can be found resting on dew-wetted vegetation before the sun reaches them.

The head, thorax and abdomen are always dark glossy black. The wings show as from grey to black, according to the the angle of the light. This is more problematic with flash illumunation, as used here (twin).

Normally, the hind wings are visible, for a photograph, only for seconds after landing.

These shots were in May.

Thanks, Birdie.

That is how you mostly find them.
