p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon D810 over D750.. Your thoughts plz

I'm planning to get D810 or D750 (used) soon. Now the camera owners are selling both the models as pancakes. I'm a D700 user and i shoot more of Famliy vacation pics and landscapes.. hint of Astro in future after getting either of the camera. Dynamic range of D700 is not great for landscape so im planning to get either of D810 or D750.

Ergonomically i should be moving towards D810 due to button layout, similar model upgrade. But D750 is 600$ cheaper compared and small file size.

I'm confused between 2 model. More than the technical diffrences i would like to know hor is the color rendering of both the models? which is more pleasing?

D750 is quite bit better at astro due to lower noise in long ISO 3200 exposures. Compare here: http://www.brendandaveyphotography.com/more/long-exposure-sensor-testing/

Dynamic range of both D810 and D750 in short exposures is similar, but for same ISO D750 has slightly higher dynamic range. http://www.photonstophotos.net/Charts/PDR.htm#Nikon%20D750,Nikon%20D810

Both are great cameras. I would focus on handling differences, try holding it in hand. Does it fit? Is weight ok? Do you care about wifi? Do you do long exposures with strong filters? (D810 has builtin viewfinder shutter to avoid light leaks, D750 has easy to lose clip, I lost mine already) D810 is more like D700 in controls and body style.

Color is similar enough not to care for most people. But for landscapes added resolution is plus for D810. Display of D750 can be tilted which is great to avoid unpleasant shooting positions, that is useful landscapes too.

For landscape photography I would definitely go with the D810 over the D750. No problems with astro or night photography when using the 14-24mm f/2.8 or a 20mm f/1.8 or 24mm f/1.4 lens with either camera but obviously more detail with the D810.

The one place where the D750 works much better is with action photography. For sports or wildlife shooting I would pick the D750 over the D810.

The D750 camera is smaller than the D810 and so for me it is not as comfortable for shooting. Someone with smaller hands might easily find the reverse to be true.

Although the D810 has both a CF and a SD card slot I would recommend if you do get this camera to not bother to invest in CF cards but stick with SD ones which will be usable with future cameras and cost a lot less.

having owned both:

D810
- 64 base iso and very good dynamic range
- larger, heavier (but more comfortable grip)
- 1/8000 shutter
- feels way more solid than D750
- no optical low pass filter (sharper images but more prone to moire)

D750
- lighter
- flip screen

Your price difference is outdated. It has been changing quickly and lately it is close to $350-400.

Here is how I would decide:
- Do you care for a tilt screen?
- Do you care for a pro body (i.e. no silly compromises)?
- Are you a pixel peeper?

If you are mainly shooting family, the D750 is a better choice. If landscapes/seascapes definitely the D810 particularly with ISO 64 DR and higher MP's with no AA filter.

In effect two very different cameras and both are excellent.

When I reverted back to Nikon about 2 years ago I opted for the D750 and loved it so much that I then also picked up a used D810. I ended using the D810 a lot more as I personally like it better for portraits and landscapes. I still have my D750 alongside my D850.

There is no wrong choice as the D750 is amazing value and is still used by so many wedding photographers.

Don't pass on the value of the D810, cheap for what you get.
Bonus; layout and it handles more like the D700 you have used for many years

D810.
Similar layout and controls, 36 MP(More details) for landscape photography. I'm not so much favourable towards Flip screen and Wifi. It may be attractive for some.

Are D810 images are crisp/sharp compared to D750 due to absence of AA Filter?

Price diffrence in Singapore is close to 1100$ for new body and in used market it is around 600$++. So i need to convince myself to get one model even it is expensive compared to the other. Glad that everyone pointed the right direction.

BTW, I am pretty happy with the d750. I had a d800 and had a hard time getting sharp images at slower / normal shutter speeds. I know this was discussed before. Some said it was the slap of the shutter not being dampened enough and others said that it was just the cost of using a 36 mp sensor. My question is: is the d810 more forgiving than the d800 with regards to shutter speed and sharp images?

Just had a look at your link.

There's one massive issue with his processing.
He boosts the exposure by 5 stops AFTER shooting at iso 3200. Who does that?
My D810 looks amazing at 3200 iso and 30sec exposures.
Scaling down to web viewing formats, all the noise is basically gone.

Actually I had some issue getting sharp images using the 105 1.4e on the d750 rather than on my d800.
For this lens the d750 might be just ated too light and I'm using my d800 almost exclusively in th quiet mode and have no issues at all with pixel level sharpness.
There are many things I like more about my d800 then on the d750, but of course it has it' s advantages, like
the better autofocus and better high iso quality and tilting display, and of course the lighter and smaller body makes it more easy to carry around when hiking ( forgot the better video quality).
But for the majority of my photography I prefer the d800 and soon d850 !

Higher resolution cameras (and all are in the 21+MP range) provide more detail and this also makes problems with the photographer's technique more apparent. I have been shooting for a great many years but with the D800e camera I had to be more conscious of technique and not use old rules of thumb for exposure settings or minimum shutter speeds, etc.

When I first saw images from the D800e I was surprised by how much I could enlarge them without pixelation. I could go larger with a D800e JPG than I could with the D3, my old camera) with a RAW file.

If I was shooting sports in low light I would want the D750. If I was shooting indoors in general without flash and IR autofocus assist, I would want the D750. If I was photographing birds in flight I would want the D750.

By the way if I was buying a D8xx camera on the used market my choice would be a D800e as it provides the best overall value and 99% of the IQ of the D810.

i'm using both. D750 is smaller and lighter but difference is not that big. D810 has much better sensor. Im not talking about Low/High ISO performance but overall rendering. It just produce much better looking images. Check image samples on Flickr or even here. There is much more better looking images taken with D810 than D750.

Crazy for flip mon as I also have Sony but...still attached to my D800/810 for everything else. D750 serves as a backup only.
Go for D810
