p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Need help updating my equipment

I'm looking for your thoughts up upgrading my photo equipment. I'm an amateur photographer, taking photos of son's soccer team and daughter's cheerleading. I currently own a Nikon D90 with a Nikon 18-200 and I've missed so many shots because of low light on the field or the gym. I've been researching for about 1 year on my next setup. I think it should be a Nikon D500....I have looked closely at the D750. There's the whole debate about full frame vs crop-sensor. Most photographers I talk to at the outdoor games, as well as the indoor games, tell me I need a 2.8 lens to get the shots I really want. With the D500, I'm thinking of getting:

Tamron f2.8 70-200 G2
Tamron f2.8 24-70 G2

The Nikon lenses are out of my reach and the reviews of both Tamron lenes seem really good. Since I also like to take portait photos of the kids(home-coming dance, Prom, etc), I've thought about getting an 85mm prime. Since the D500 is a crop-sensor DSLR, I would set my 24-70 to about 56mm to come close to the 85mm, and I think that would work. I also love photography on family vacations, so I'm thinking of a teleconverter for the 70-200. Maybe down the road, I might look for a wide-angle lens. My current single lens does everything; why couldn't it be f2.8?.....and, sharper images?

What do you think about the D500 and the two lens? I'm open to any suggestions you have.

Thanks, Tom

As an owner of both a D500 and a D750, if you need the AF speed or the continuous buffer, get the D500.

Otherwise, the D750 works plenty well.

They both perform above expectations with regards to image quality and ISO noise, especially when using ETTR.

I've heard nothing but good things about the G2 70-200, I've got my eye on one as well. Can't speak to the 24-70. I use a Nikon 24-120 f/4 and I'm quite happy with it on my D500.

Get the D500 for lower high ISO noise and fantastic focus. If this does not solve your issues on the long end get the Tamron f2.8 70-200 G2. I'd expect you will be OK on the wide end yet a faster lens will not hurt

I think a D7500 will do every bit as well as a D500 for a lot less $$. And, if you have a 70-200mm f2.8 you really don't need an 85mm for portraits. I shoot family portraits on the side (paid) and used to have an 85mm, but ended up selling it and just use the Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 VR. And back to the D7500. The focus on it is very good, and I think a DX camera is a better bet for you shooting football as to match it on a D750 you'd need 300mm f2.8, which is big time expensive. I do think the D7500 is going to be such an advance over D90 that you will be very happy, and will have saved about a $1,000.

Factoring in cost and maybe a bit better performance at higher ISOs, you might look at the D7200. I've been very pleased with its performance with 2.8 zooms for everything low-light from weddings to trains (don't have Kent 's flash skills though). New D7200s are selling <$900; used in the $600s.

If your a budget get a D7200. Their really good for the money.

If you have more of a budget the D500 has the great AF. D750 has great AF too (not as good as D500), but is a very solid camera too.

I would get a 70-200 Tamron. I have had good luck with the G1 i'm sure the G2 will be great.

D500 AF beats everything hands down. I bought my last ikon lens a couple years ago when I got a killer deal on the 18-149. I refuse to buy into Nikon's extorti--er ludicrous prices.

Among ALL DSLR's, the D500 (along with the D5 and now the D850) has the best AF system.

Nothing beats it. I love mine.

Why not get it and get ii over with?

Yes, your lens selections are good ones, and for the reasons you already have said.
