p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Schneider PC-TS 28/4.5

Anyone here happened to use the uncommon Schneider PC-TS 28/4.5? I have the 90/4.5 and absolutely adore it, but I've heard a few rumblings (namely on Luminous Landscape) that the 28 is of a less caliber (problematic, given its price).

Also, I haven't used the 90 on my D850 yet, but I'm optimistic that it was not "maxxed out" by my D750. One of these days I'll write up a post with some images. I've found that I'm much more prone to use movements for stitching than for perspective correction, but I'm going to try to do some work of the latter type as well.

I've never seen any of the Schneider beasts in person.

I can't really see how these could be a good value, especially when you have the native 24mm PC-E to work with.

I owned the old Nikon 28 PC, but can't recommend it, mostly due to noticeable pincushion distortion (a complete no-no in a PC lens!) and some vignetting. But "back then", that was the best their was until Canon came out with their first 24 TS-E (and to a lesser degree, the Oly 24 PC).

I've always been curious about the Leica "R" /Schneider 28/2.8 PC lens, but never enough to buy one. I'm sure it could be Leitax'ed to Nikon mount. Here's a current one on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Leica-PC-SUPER-ANGULON-R-28mm-f-2-PC-Lens-w-case-MINT-/292251120290?epid=99700621&hash=item440b8632a2:g:n6YAAOSwpiNZuAaW

Here's an even nicer, newer R lens (both are shift-only, no tilt): http://www.ebay.com/itm/LEICA-R-F-SCHNEIDER-28MM-PC-SUPER-ANGULON-R-F2-8-R-LENS-W-SHDE-NEAR-MINT/263191349404?_trkparms=aid%3D222007%26algo%3DSIM.MBE%26ao%3D2%26asc%3D47507%26meid%3Dc5a59e86c3ba4ab68c3461416766c5ef%26pid%3D100005%26rk%3D5%26rkt%3D6%26sd%3D292251120290&_trksid=p2047675.c100005.m1851

Good luck on your quest!

I'm not an expert, but I believe this lens isn't "a nicer, newer R lens" as you suggest, but the Schneider branded version of the lens they also supplied to Leica.

At some point, Schneider sold this lens under its own name and with a variety of lens mounts, including a Leica R mount, which they also sold separately, so owners could easily swap the lens from one mount to another. I'm not aware that there were any differences between the Leica and Schneider branded versions other than the font of the lettering on the lens.

As for its performance, I have a Leica version of this lens and used a Leitax mount to change it to a Nikon mount. The conversion works perfectly and the lens performs well, although it does render images with less contrast and apparent sharpness than many of today's modern lenses.

And unlike many photographers, I haven't found its distortion characteristics problematic, even for the architectural-related photography I typically do. <shrugs>

I don't use it often, but there are times when this look is perfect for the photo I'm taking, so I keep it around regardless...

FYI, Schneider also made a 50/f4.5 tilt-shift lens for Bronica that was sold under their name for their E-series 645 camera. They're fairly scarce these days (and priced accordingly if/when one does come up for sale) but could be easily adapted to a Nikon body and it was my understanding back in the day that it was a decent performer.

Hey the PC-TS 28 MSRP is down to $5k from $8k at launch!! That's a deal!

Yeah, the prices are crazy. No way I'd buy any of them new unless Schneider refreshed them with thoroughly modern designs (and even then they're high). However, I found my 90 LNIB for $1600. It's worth every bit of that and then some. Only real weakness is that it's 4:1 MFD versus the 85/2.8's 2:1. Of course, it also took a couple years to find that deal versus I could get the 85 for less on any given Sunday.

But I'm a big "lenses should outlast your camera" / "brand agnostic" guy. I own one (inexpensive) lens without an aperture ring. Plus, the Schneiders let you rotate tilt and shift independently of each other (and around either a tripod foot or the camera's axis), and there are no locking knobs. And they just look cool.

Also worth noting that they cover 645 so if I hit the lottery and buy a GFX I could use them there and probably even have a little movement range.

I have used both the 28mm and 90mm lenses. I had used them on the Fuji GFX system and I really never used on my Nikon D810. I have a D850 and still have the 90mm lens so will try when i get a chance. I will compare with the Nikon 85mm PCE when I get a chance. The lens can be shifted and tilted in the same plane which is an advantage but it is more complicated to use than the nikon PCE.

The photographer I share my studio with has that Schneider 28mm PC lens. It's a big beast of a lens making the Canon 17mm t/s-e look petite by comparison. It's pretty awkward to use compared to Canon's lenses and it only shifts in one direction so it has to be rotated to shift the other way. It appears to be very very well built. Benny says it's pretty good optically. I'll have to borrow it and see for myself then report back. Pretty sure they didn't sell very many of them. I'd rather Canon fill out their tilt shift line with a full compliment including a 28 and 35 tilt-shift versions. The thing is, when you need a 28 and it's the exact right focal length, a 24 or 35 won't do.

Okay. Benny's leaving to shoot in Germany Saturday but he's not taking that Schneider 28PC with him so I'll be running some tests on it next week on a 5DSR. Curious to see how it performs.

Peter, you say 28PC so I'm thinking you're talking about the older 28/2.8 PC[only] that Jim linked to, rather than the 28/4.5 PC-TS?

I have that lens mounted to a 5562 with a 5DSR on the back now. What a convoluted mess to tilt, rotate or shift, plus it's a preset lens so it's really easy to forget to actually stop the lens down for shooting. And talk about big and heavy. Jeez. We'll get images soon...

Interesting, I totally had a different experience of the tilt, shift, rotate operation. I hate how flaky the tripod ring rotation is, given how important that movement is. This is even more true for the 28; the 90 is small enough that it's much more feasible (if seldom preferable) to not use the tripod foot. Other than that, I love the movements and find them far preferable to the Nikon or Canon methods (and I haven't tried Hartblei).

I'll agree on size and weight though; even the 90 isn't compact. And it is a shame that it's preset aperture and no EXIF data. I wish there'd been a way to make it Ai-D like the CV SL II and Zeiss ZF.2. But that doesn't seem to be possible with a tilt/shift, considering that Nikon's went "E type" years before they started deploying that tech elsewhere. Oh well, I shoot tilt/shifts stopped down with live view anyway.

Looking forward to your comments on image quality!
