Iíve been busy cleaning up from Harvey and other chores but needed a break and decided to see if I had my fairly new Sigma 100-400 C dialed in as I am planning on bringing it to Costa Rica in a week. Many of my typical birding spots are still not accessible due to the storm so I spent some time at the hummingbird feeder and was glad to find that there were still decent numbers of birds moving through on their way south. These were all at 400mm and f/6.3 with a Canon 7D mk2. I was told that they werenít sharp enough but I thought they were pretty decent. The last one could have probably been a little better in my opinion but I was just happy that it came out with the eye in focus since the birds were moving so fast I couldnít even really see what happened until I reviewed the photos. Anyway, I think this lens will serve me well on the trip. Thanks for looking and C&C is welcome, maybe my sharpness expectations are too low?

The male was being pretty shy, mostly getting pushed around by the youngsters for some reason but I was happy that I got at least one with the red gorget showing.

Iím always impressed with how aggressive these tiny birds are. This was one image where I though content trumped absolute technical quality.

Hi Greg,

you don't have a sharpness issue as I'm seeing plenty of feather detail. You might want to brighten 2 and 4 a touch, I love the behaviour you captured in the last

Thanks for the feedback Morris, yes the second and third shots didn't have the light angle optimal so there is some shadow making it difficult to see as much detail. I am always a little hesitant to increase the brightness much as that ugly noise is hiding just beneath the surface. I have to be more careful about the lighting.

I try to refrain from pixel-peeping and enjoy the pics as a whole. They look sharp to me too. Love the action of the last: it's a standout among hummer pics in my opinion.

Thanks for posting, and enjoy your trip!
