Trying to figure out if I buy a 400 or 600 due to the extra versatillity a 400 will offer

but for my surf photography I'll need length lots of it

so what would be sharpest shooting at F8 or F11 on a 1Ds MkIII body

a 400/2.8 IS series 1 lens with a 2x converter on it

or

a 600/4IS series 1 with a 1.4x on it

Thanks in advance

I've used my 400 2.8 IS for surfing. AF speed with a 1.4x II is great with my 1D4, 5D3 and 7D2. With a 2x II and the same bodies, AF is slower than I like. For this application, I'd prefer a 600 f4 IS + 1.4x II.

Consider whether you'll ever be shooting in the evening or under the lights for any other sports. If so, you'll need the f2.8. Also I wouldn't anticipate needing to be at f8 or especially f11 with either.
