I recently purchased the aforementioned combo. This is my first micro43 gear (The rest of my gear is high end Sony). I was looking for a telephoto combo that is lighter and more compact than Sony gear. I read on some forum that Olympus lenses were sharpest wide open. I took some test photos, primarily of flowers and signs, at 150mm handheld in aperture mode at f/2.8 and f/5.6. All the f5.6 photos were sharper. Is this expected? All images were RAW.

Thanks

Yes, the 40-150 Pro sharpens up noticeably between f/2.8 and f/5.6. I've found it to be somewhat soft wide open compared to my old 70-200 IS II.

With most m43 lenses the sweet spot is 1 stop down from the widest aperture, and the 40-150 PRO is no exception - best center resolution/sharpness is f4.0 (f5.6 with the TC) .... and f5.6 is marginally sharper than f2.8:

I shot the same images at f4/0. When compared with those shot at f5.6 most were noticeably sharper. In some instances they were equally sharp. In no cases were those shot at f5.6 sharper than the f/4.0 images.

Thanks so much for the help.

No even most m43 lenses are not the sharpest wide open. However most of them, pretty much all high end m43 lenses are very sharp already wide open. Often much more so then lenses for other systems.

I never stop down my lenses for sharpness but only for depth of field. This was never the case when I was shooting Nikon for example.

So expect good or excellent sharpness wide open, but even sharper a stop down.

I too normally shoot wide open or at the len's sweet spot i.e. 1 or 2 stops down depending on the lens.
