To each his own but I HATE cropping.

But, a 24mm is more versatile. You can crop a 24mm to get 28mm, but not the other way around. I don't own a 28mm, but do own a 24mm for that reason. However, I chose the Nikon 24mm PC-E (tilt/shift.) I shoot mostly landscapes and architecture, so a tilt/shift lens is a hundred times more useful to me. I really have no use for a conventional 24m/28mm. I also use the 24mm shift to make perfect three shot panos, so I don't even need to take a wider lens. A conventional lens with AF is good for general purpose

Cropping is not the way to go. It should be the last resort.

Sell the 24G and keep the 28D.

The reason? Collector value.

28D is no longer in production and it was a fairly limited lens (less than 8000 made). Its performance is still up there among the pro-grade lenses, so if you got it for a good deal, it's no-brainer. I remember when my dad got his 2 (yes, two, one in each color of lettering) Leica Noctilux F1.2 back when F1.0 was announced. The collector who sold my dad both copies felt that they would depreciate in value faster now that F1.0 was the new speed king. My dad pretty much paid slightly more than a brand new F1.0 back then to get the pair of F1.2s.

Fast forward a decade or two later, the F1.2 are up in the wazoo while F1.0 about 2x-3x their prices. Was the F1.0 or the F0.95 not better? Oh they sure were. But they are not the same. No more Leica Noctis have hand-ground aspherical elements, let alone 2 of them in a single lens.

You can always get a 28E if that suits your fancy. I have already seen copies going for 1700 (300 off MSRP) on fleebay... it might be entirely possible to get it in the low 1k in less than a year time.

I know it can sound stupid... but that's not much different than how other perceive value on things like watches or cars.

I'd say a small crop is quite a good way of obtaining the FOV you want.
But only you can decide what's an acceptable crop whether it's 1.2x, 1.5x or more.
So if your most used FOV are 28 and 35mm, I'd say a single 28E will do very well.
But if you often find 28mm not wide enough maybe one of the 24mm's is better.
Or if you like all the FL between 24-35mm quite equally then maybe the Sigma 24-35/f2 fits the bill.

I'm now at a point where 90% of my shots are with the 28e or 105e. Everyone shoots 35, make 28 work and it conveys elegance. Its trick is in compositions. If bokeh is all you are looking for there are better options, though I love the cream on this.

Thank you again for all the insights and recommendations. I'm expecting my D850 next week, so hope to have some 28/1.4 AF-D samples to share soon on that body. I found the 24/1.4G too wide for me on the street. My Voigtlander 40/2 SLII (on Df) can be a little tight in the kind of towns I enjoy traveling most to, so looking forward to trying out a 28's POV.

Why? I crop probably 90% of my keepers. There is usually always something I can do to improve the composition in post. Also, i donít always want to print at 2:3.

The only reason I can see to avoid cropping is the ability to print big. And at 36+ MP, there is a lot of room to crop unless you are printing pretty large.

This hasn't come up yet, but I tried a bunch of wide Nikons and ended up with the Sigma 24-35 f/2 Art lens. It is worth putting hands on if you've never tried it. Yes, 1 stop slower...but no need to crop either. It stayed glued to one body all day for weddings.

The 28 f/1.4D has long interested me. Always thought it would pair nicely with the 85 f/1.4D. It would look better than any of the modern lenses mounted on s Df, but at the current market price it seems a little absurd.

To purchase a 24mm... knowing you're going to crop to 28mm is different (to me) than cropping in post for a reason you couldn't foresee during capture. I almost never crop... to me it's a bad habit.

When you're starting with 36mp+. cropping is no big deal. I generally crop every photo anyway as I rarely want the framing the camera gives. I would rather crop than use a zoom, except for fast paces paid work (weddings, event photography, sports.) Starting out with large format photography (4x5), I learned to use cropping as a strategy for lens management. Instead of carrying a bunch of expensive Rodenstock lenses, I was able to standardize on the equivalents of 24/50/100mm (in large format that is 75/150/300mm). It saves a lot of $$, and makes your bag lighter. This is the strategy used pretty much through the entire history of photography. That said, when doing actual "street" photography (usually in downtown Chicago,) I generally use my small unobtrusive Leica IIIc with Leica LTM Elmar lenses 28/35/50/90mm. The 28mm actually does work pretty well for that. The other camera I'll use for "street" photography is a Nikon F3T with Nikon lenses 28/50/105mm. I would actually prefer a 24mm, but I'm not aware of any F-mount 24mm lens period correct to the 1980s that performs as well as the 28mm f2.

i agree. Cropping is just part of standard post processing. Taking the shot is just the beginning of the process. Not the end. It has always been this way. I donít understand the idea that the shot needs to be perfect out of the camera. None of mine are. They are always improved in post. Always.

That sounds dangerous.

My lens lineup right now is (as I see it) a kind of "best of" from the AF-D lenses, with a couple Sigma Arts filling in the gaps.

24-35 f/2 Art
35 f/2D
50 f/1.4 Art
60 f/2.8D
85 f/1.4D
180 f/2.8D

Two months later and my D850 finally arrived. I haven't tried out the 28/1.4D yet on the new body, but I did have some fun with it on my Df riding Amtrak earlier this month on the way up to NY:

^lovely pictures with the 28/1.4D -- thank you.

(on the original topic of this thread, I have to say: I find the rendering of the 24/1.4G delicious.)

If you want to borrow a 28 1.8G to see if you can live with it, drop me a PM, you can shoot with mine for a week or so beside the legend. I am your neighbor in PG. I personally love the 28mm FL and for me it would be between the 28 1.4D and 28 1.4E. A very nice problem to have. With a D850 being the intended body, I might bias slightly towards the 1.4E (assuming possibly in ignorance that it would deliver more details while still providing nice rendering), but not being fully familiar with the rendering of the D, I'd want to run them side by side (lensrentals maybe?).

EDIT: Forgot to say welcome to the forums. A good bunch of folks here.

I have the 28 1.4E on order, Nikon India doesnít have it in stock and I wonít get it until Christmas, canít wait to use it after seeing all the shots people have posted on FM. I also have Nikon 24 1.4G, which is up for sale. Fantastic lens but too wide for me, I prefer the lightweight and excellent Nikon 20mm f1.8G if I want to go wide.
