p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Which en el 18 battery for the D850?

Sorry, but this is confusing to me. And I want to avoid having to return something to Amazon.

1. Is this a sufficient battery to reach 9 fps?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B009K6UWWQ/ref=dp_cerb_1

2. And if so, why does it not have the A or B designation? It is rated 2800mAh and 10.8V. And it says nothing about the D850, only the D4, D4S and D5.

3. Do we need the A or B designation...and which one...A or B?

4. What are our brand choices for alternatives to the price-gouging Nikon battery?

Thank you.

Any en-el18 battery should work and be enought to reach the 9fps since they have higher voltage. I have one of these and it works beautifuly!! Keeps its charge and last a long time!

So just to be clear you have the DSTE battery and it produces 9 fps when used in the grip with the D850, correct? I've been waiting for someone to certify that as I have two of these batteries for my D500 grip and was planning to buy a third if it achieved 9 fps in the D850 ( I don't have the grip yet to do the experiment myself). I think they are great batteries--last forever!

EN-EL 18- 9v, 2000mAh
EN-EL 18a- 9v, 2500mAh
EN-EL 18b- 9v, 2500mAh with improved internal circuitry

Aftermarket EN-EL 18- 9v, Overstated mAh, who knows about the rest... (but I use them)

What you need for 9FPS is the 9 volts, so any of the EN-EL18 variants *should* work, but Nikon specifies the EN-EL18b.

Within Nikon anyway, the variant changes have to do with mAh rating and also changing the discharge profile to deal with WiFi/Bluetooth.

The wording in the manual is somewhat ambiguous because it specifically states that any EN-EL15 will work with the grip, but in the FPS sections, it always specifies the EN-EL18b. I suspect they all will work unless Nikon has done some trickery to sell more batteries but I haven't been able to verify this myself.

I suspect they will work too, but have read that sometimes Nikon figures out a way to tweak the circuitry so non-Nikon batteries won't work (at least to achieve the higher fps rate). So just looking for someone who can say definitively that it works because they have tested it--with this camera, grip, and this specific battery.

You should be aware that using the EN-EL18b battery greatly reduces the buffer capacity of the D850 (see page 269 in Nikon Menu Guide).

NEF lossless 12-bit buffer is 170 shots with EN-EL15a but only 54 shots with the EN-EL18b

NEF lossless 14-bit buffer is 51 shots with EN-EL15a but only 29 shots with the EN-EL18b

Get 2 more fps with EN-EL18b but half or less the buffer capacity. Overall I can see myself avoiding use of the EN-EL18b batteries unless I truly need the extra couple frames per second.

You are correct. That is weird. I am trying to wrap my head around why this would be. Is the faster frame rate just overpowering the ability of the camera to write to the card? I canít believe it is a function of the battery directly.

This is news to me.

Yes, I just checked your reference and you are right. Thank you.

I am going to be shooting BIF and will need 9fps, or I may as well stick with the D500.

I am quite sure I can live with 29 frames of buffer. I mean I have never reached that in a burst. Really not sure what it all means. After say.....10 frames, will the D850 immediately be ready for another burst if I am using the Sony G series XQD card? I don't know. So many questions.

What more restrictions are there? The D850 advantage seems to get skinnier all the time.

Not only does one not need a D850 for BIF shots, but one neither needs 9 fps.

Always amusing when someone buys new one of the most expensive bodies, then considers the most expensive batteries for that body are a "price-gouging" price.

If you are sitting over a dead fish you threw out for an eagle... you only need single shot.

I use an 18A and two older 18's in my D5. They all work fine. The older 18's drain a bit faster but still last a long time. I intend to get the grip without purchasing any extra batteries. If my memory serves me the Nikon rep at the D850 NPS session said they were all very compatible. The EN15's are also the same as the D810 and D500 with a new name. They are the L-ION 20's re-badged.

Baiting an eagle? tisk tisk!

Just kidding, I really don't care. Just waiting for the "holier than thou" crowd to start complaining. Or perhaps this isn't dpreview so that kind of stuff doesn't happen here... I'm new.
