p.1 #16 · p.1 #16 · New TechArt AF adapter: Canon EF to Fujifilm GFX unveiled! | |
this is the review by Timon..a member here (forgot his nick here. )
Pros:
- Light, well built. This adapter is fantastic in its build and size, smaller than many of my "dumb" adapters, no additional "box" on the side to carry around. Looks much more low-key and standard to the GFX.
- Being able to now have full aperture control on Canon lenses and AF when needed.
- For adapted focusing, this lens is as good as it gets (will explain more in the cons section). Focusing is really dependent on the lens used, there are no surprises (the 85 1.2 L II focuses slow, the 24-105 II IS is snappy, the 50 1.2L is in the middle somewhere).
- Mentioned elsewhere: able to capture lens metadata (huge!), accurate focus, which is definitely the case- in some scenarios as good as the GFX lenses.
Cons:
(I say "cons" lightly because of the inate nature of adapting third party glass, using contrast detect autofocus, and based on what available options are out there.)
But...
- I know others have mentioned being able to capture people walking and movement. I would say there's a subtle difference between being ABLE to, and whether to rely on it for consistent focus. For example, if you can get an image in focus 1 out of 3 times, that means you are able to, but not necessarily the application for that adapter. Of course, that is subjective. All that being said, the way that it focuses (breathing in and out each time it focuses, sometimes seeking the whole range of focus before locking on), I would rely on it for anything that doesn't sit and wait for you. That all being said, the focus seems really, really accurate when it locks in. I tested in window light indoors, and it doesn't even seem to fool as much in backlit situations as it should. Really great.
- Aperture showing F2.8. Really minor, but hopefully fixable in firmware.
- Battery drain: after 5 minutes of testing AF, my full battery went down one bar (20%). Will need to test this further.
- Ultimately in my tests, I could still manually focus faster than the AF. In my tests, to lock in to focus:
85 1.2L II: 3-5 seconds
50 1.2L: 2-3 seconds
24-105 IS II: 1-2 seconds...Show more →
and this: Ultimately in my tests, I could still manually focus faster than the AF.. come as expected . I would wait for a 2nd generation.
