They appear to have become more abundant in the Philadelphia area lately. Here's the male of a mated pair who raised two cubs this year. He's taller than a German Shepherd and weighs around 50 lbs.

I've always found him easy to read and consistent in his behavior. He's usually fairly relaxed around people, seemingly to the point of boredom. And he's obviously quite protective of his cubs, who are sitting right next to him here. Not difficult to interpret his baleful gaze, I think.

One night, when the cubs were maybe 9 weeks old, he stepped out of the woods for a moment to look at me like this, as if to say: "The kids won't be playing outside tonight, so you can go home now."

It is amazing to me that the people I am around have never heard of these intelligent and handsome guys yet. I guess because they haven't knowingly invaded Oklahoma yet.

Great picture though. First one I have noticed posted here.

Excellent!

Very nice coywolf portrait, Christian! I think the background is quite complimentary.

I've had a few interactions with them here in Western NY too, but nothing consistent. Both times though I was able to get a few pictures. The most recent was earlier this summer (pics here). The other time was two years ago (pics at the end of this set). I had one other sighting over at Presque Isle State Park (Erie, PA).

Maybe their habitat in our part of the world keeps them on the wild side?

Anyway, nice job on your part. Thanks for posting.

Good guess on the weight. I had a female chessie, same lean build, 24" at the front shoulder that weighed 50 pounds at about 1 year and picked up another 20 pounds later when she muscled up. Coyotes are really tricky to guess the weight on until they are skinned or weighed.
