p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Snowy egret

These were taken last week at the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area on Long Island, NY. I discovered a quick way to get a touch more detail in the whites using Photoshop and am wondering what you think about the results. 4 images of the snowy egret perched on a railing and a flight photo for the finale.

Morris these are beautiful. The backgrounds are awesome and feather detail is super, well done.

These look pretty good Morris. There may be a few spots that are still too bright, but if so, it's very close. So are you gonna share your discovery?

Beautiful bird with some value-added geometry included Morris. My pick is number 2.

As for the whites, I might not have looked as critically without you mentioning it but in some they look a little 'toasted' to me. They're got great detail but just look a little off. I've seen the same in some of my processing so I'm a bit sensitive to it.

Now, had you not called attention to it, I probably wouldn't have either. I don't think it's offensive, but maybe noticeable.

Thanks for posting.

Very nice Morris. The detail in 3 & 4 look the best to me.

Are you willing to share what you discovered?

Since many of you are asking, I've discovered that Photoshop's Shadow/Highlights tool dose more than reduce the brightness when you add 0 shadow and a small amount of highlight adjustment. It seems to bring out detail in the highlights. this is much quicker than curves adjustments or using layers and linear burn blending mode.

Also, the D500 seems to require -1/3 EV more compensation for white than any other camera I've owned. When I don't do this and I did not in this case there is a tiny amount of highlight clipping that I can usually recover during conversion. This is why there are some areas with very little definition.

Thank you Kim,
I agree and the second probably exhibits the highlight clipping the most of any

Thank you Mohamed,

It's easy to have a low angle when your subject is up high
