p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · D850 Serial Number question

This D850 has a Serial Number in excess of 300,000.

Do these Serial Numbers start at "1" and run in succession?

____________

If so, then I think Nikon no longer has a cash problem.

300,000 units times $3400 = $1,020,000,000

Can we cut that in half to yield Nikon's gross take?

If so, wouldn't that be $510,000,000 so far ? If so, that is just so far.

Fair or not? What do you all think?

With Nikon serials, typically the first two digits you see is just the region indicator. "3" Is the USA indicator and early units will be "30". It does not mean that they have already made 300,000 units, but it probably won't take them long to get there if demand can support it.

When the D800 came out, Nikon's target was 30,000 units produced per month. The Sendai (Japan) factory making them had ~1,600 employees and the camera took about 4hr to make. In contrast, at the time they only targeted 5,000 D4 cameras produced per month. The D850 by all accounts seems to be even more popular, and presumably Nikon has at least the same if not more production capability in the Thailand plant than they did in Japan in 2012 especially after all the moving around due to the natural disasters. They had so many preorders for the D850 that they still haven't even come close to filling them with the Sep 18/19 shipment, I think it is going to do very well for them. On top of that you have all the "wait and see" buyers who want reviews before they buy which is probably an even larger number. Margin on high-end cameras is also quite high, but the R&D costs are a bit of a black box.

Personally I think this will be another Nikon "classic", but that is of course something that can't be proven for quite some time.

Different camera, but Nikon.
I have a 3 year old D810 with a higher s/n than the new body I bought last month. The new body is in the gold box having the 100th year badge, so it's a recent build.

5 is Canada.

Some of the D5's are also sold with Japanese or other country's serials. It's not really an exact science, even though it probably should be haha.
