My first shot with my new lens, 300/4+MC-14, from about 2 meters, hand held.

Bigger

Two conclusions from this shot:

1. I think I am going to have a LOT of fun with this baby!

2. I need to wash our windows!

;-)

Nice job! The 300/4 and Nocticron are my favorite lenses .... followed closely by the 60 macro and 75/1.8!

I would say this lens is sharp enough! Here with the MC-14, hand held, ISO 400 and around 1/50-1/80 at 6.3, pretty poor light, but not hopeless.

Bigger here:

and I LOVE the AF!!

Had my first eye done two days ago, second one on Monday. Vision hasn't yet normalized, takes a while, but so far, a huge difference! Brighter, clearer, and the WB is VERY different. What I thought was white with my left eye looks sort of smokey yellow-green, and with the right, it looks white! Guess I will have to go back and adjust the WB on all my pictures from the last couple years...

Well, if this combination can do this well in crappy light, I wonder what it can do in good light!

1/30, hand held, 420mm.

If there is enough light to stop down to f/8, the added DoF is a real help. Hand held. The IBIS-IS combination is fantastic!

I find it MUCH easier to be selective when focusing, like little birds among the branches of a tree. With the Canon and the FT lenses, the Mark II struggled and usually found something else to focus on other than what I wanted, but the 300/4-Mk II seems to know what I want and zips right to it, like this rare visitor in our neck of the woods. First un-cropped...

Nice Dan.
I did some tests between this combo and Sony A6300 w/100-400GM and 1.4tc of a distant Osprey.
Very close. This time I think the Oly did a little better.

When I compared them for the eclipse, the Sony did a little better.
Which do I take to Costa Rica in two months? :-)

Take both! You definitely need the reach of the 300 PRO (600mm) + TC ... and you will also need your 100-400 for the hummingbirds, etc.

The 3 most used lenses when I was there was my 300 PRO, followed by the 60 macro (for the frogs, etc), and the 40-150 PRO.

We will be going back there next February. My buddy Joshua will be shooting with his A9 + GM 100-400 ... and A7R II + Canon 400/2.8L II + TC.

That is what I am coming down to, too. Although, the 100-400 with TC and on an APS-c sensor is about the same (or supposed to be, but the Olympus image ends up being about 10% or so bigger).
Maybe if I don't bring any clothes, the luggage will be manageable.

Might be tough talking my wife into that one.

Backgrounds can be pretty busy sometimes. (With MC-14, wide open)

A little Lightroom selective bluring helps.

I don't have the 300 F4 but I do have the 40-150 and the bokeh is very similar in many cases. I use selective blurring or minus clarity quite often too just to smoothen it some more. Works quite well actually and it's usually a fairly quick process.

I have run into that with my telescopes too. They are extremely sharp, but at the expense of what is called creamy bokeh. Much easier to blur something than to make a soft image sharp!

I agree with Wilbus, try reducing the Clarity of the background.

I would reduce the contrast as well to further soften and mute the background.

Have to try that. The new lens has a lot more contrast than the older Canon 400/5.6 and I still haven't gotten used to it. Plus my NEW EYES! Talk about clarity and contrast! Everything looks so much sharper and, well.. contrastier. Colors are so much more intense and strong. Have to calibrate my brain still.
