This is a lovely capture and pose Dave. I wonder what this would look like with gentler processing

Define "gentler"

What I started with. Un processed but resized raw converted to jpg.

It appears you started with 1 stop underexposed. Start with white subject, +1 EV or shoot in manual and adjust till you are one click under flashing highlight warning.

As for processing, the first thing to do is add the +1 EV. Easy in Photoshop ACR. Then import and process. I' Guessing you pulled up the highlights which created even more of a contrast problem. Also the fake catchlight in the eye needs to be gentler.

This is a great egret is strong sidelight:

Note that I used a flash with the built in reflector to fill she shadows, It's a small yet valuable addition. You can make a similar adjustment in post.

I hope this helps,

Morris

The difference I see in our two shots is yours, the white about fills the frame, mine it's maybe 10 percent of it.
You had time to set up the shot, here, you get a few shots off and they are gone.
So over the years, I get what I can, and make sure the whites aren't blown out.
One more note, I didn't add a catchlight, that came from processing th raw.

Thanks for the comments folks.

I like the dramatic lighting. I think it fits well with that stately pose.

Thanks for posting.
