Just wondering if I'll be happy with the RX1R or not? I have a lot of lenses but my experience with the CV 65 and Loxia 21 have me considering a change in lineup to only the very best primes that are reasonably-sized.

I have the Loxia 35 and it's not bad, but it doesn't excite me the way the Loxia 21 and CV 65 do. Thinking about selling some other stuff including the Loxia 35 and picking up the Batis 135 and the RX1R2 instead.

The RX2 whatever they call it is a fantastic 35mm F2 no question and one of the best around so it fits in that top level like the 21,65,135. Buy the 135 by the way. Anyway for me it was a second body instead of my main and that alone was a little issue but more my issue was shooting flash both on camera flashes and transmitters is they got in the way of the EVF . So that was a big issue

Now let's talk money it's a big investment. Let's say you spent 2600 used. That's almost a Batis 135 new / Loxia 35 used. So in a way you get a Batis for free. Not really but you understand. Honestly though and Fred's ran that test between the FE 35 1.4 and the RX2 . I never had them the same time but Fred realized how nice the 35 1.4 is and the look is essentially the same. I agree with him although my experience is at different ownership times. So you could go FE 35 1.4 or you can get really thrifty and I like it better than the Loxia 35 because I can shoot it at 1.7. I'm talking the VC 35 1.7. It's very sharp wide open but you need the front filter for the corners. I'll have those parts this week and test them again and post. Than Fred's going to test my VC against his Loxia . So maybe wait on your 35 decisions because you will see the FE 35 1.4, VC 35 1.7 and Loxia 35 within the next two weeks or sooner

Just some thoughts. I'll keep my FE 35 regardless for AF wirk and the VC for travel/ landscape

I do highly recommend if you want 2 extremely great lenses the BC 65 and Batis 135. I really love them both

Yeah, the CV65 is incredible.

From what I hear the Zony 35/1.4 isn't really sharp in the corners for landscapes. I'll probably get it for portraits / events at some point, but right now I'm specifically looking at landscape use. Should have mentioned that in the OP.

Actually it's really good at 5.6. Look at that VC 3 test. I ran the Fe also

The RX1Rii is an incredible little camera with a truly amazing lens. I ended up selling mine because 35mm just isn't as useful for me as I thought it might be (I wish they'd put a 28mm on that body!)

Eating the mush - Sony RX1Rii - at 2.8

The Sonnar 35/2 (RX1 series) does not have the same level of CA correction when compared to the CV 65/2 or Batis 135/2.8 lenses. There is actually moderate axial color aberration (LoCA) when shooting wide open. Look at the image above (adorable btw!) and you will see 'green fringing' even at f/2.8. I would say not much better than the 35/1.4 ZA at f/2. Beautiful smooth rendering though.

The Loxia 21/2.8 although not as good as the CV 65 and Batis 135 in regards to CA correction, it's not that far behind.

The 35/1.4 ZA is sharp towards the corners from f/2.8... the issue is the mid-field which needs some stopping down.

if your happy with loxia 21, you should be happy with rx1. it's sharp enough for landscape wide open and the only weakness is a bit of loCA which is still better than any other 35 you can get. incidentally, i just did a comparison at infinite against the ZA 35/1.4, cv 35/1.7+pcx, and pentax 31/1.8 limited and the rx1 was the clear winner (followed by the ZA>pentax>cv+pcx).

Can you elaborate a bit on the test?

Do you mean better corrected for LoCA at f/2? Or you are referring to other characteristics like sharpness, bokeh, etc..

yeah, nehemiah and i are comparing a bunch of 35s on the a9 and a7 kolari UT. i've just looked at the infinite comparisons on the a9 so far. i'll have more to say after we're done. i was just talking cross the frame detail in that ranking. i'm pretty sure the rx1 is better than the ZA and pentax in loCA at f/2, but haven't done a real test.

here is the quick comparison at infinity. focused on hills several miles away, but center crop is from only 3 houses down (interestingly only the rx1 and ZA show the center crop to be slightly oof, FC?). refocused at each aperture till f/4. vignetting brought up the same amount in all shots. standard landscape sharpening applied. accidentally had the rx1 underexposed .7, so i raised exposure in post. lenses are leica m summilux 35/1.4 pre-asph, contax g 35/2 planar, cv 35/1.7 ultron + pcx 5m filter, pentax 31/1.8 LTD, ZA 35/1.4 distagon, and rx1 classic.

I wan't that impressed by the CV 35/1.7 Ultron + 5m front lens by looking at your samples...
The RX1 is very impressive and flat field and the 35/1.4 ZA is great except for the mid-field (at infinity).

I believe, the 35/2.8 ZA would have done quite well in comparison.

PS: I remember testing the RX1RII vs 35/1.4 ZA @f/2 and LoCA was very similar. I will try finding some crops.

I found a test I did a while back comparing rendering between these two lenses @ f/2 (RX1RII vs 35/1.4 ZA)

I thought they were similar regarding axial color aberration control @f/2 and found some samples showing this.
Actually in some cases, the RX1RII shows worse CA correction. (to be fair the Sonnar 35/2 is wide open) but still, it's one of the main complains about the 35/1.4 ZA and the amazing RX1R's Sonnar 35/2 does not do much better here...

BTW: The Sonnar 35/2 (rx1) also shows onion rings in the bokeh balls.
Also, the bokeh balls are not quite as rounded compared to the 35/1.4 ZA @f2. That is because Sonnar is wide open.

Here is a sample showing onion rings for both and roundness of the bokeh ball towards the edge. (same framing for both lenses)

I have tons of examples from both lenses side-by-side and I can confirm that they perform similarly regarding LoCA at f/2. I also find that in most situations, the 35/1.4 ZA OOF rendering is slightly smoother at f/2 in comparison.

Here is another sample:

PS: Something else not talked about here is that the maximum shutter speed for the RX1RII is 1/2000s and that is somewhat challenging when shooting wide open in bright light. (Must carry ND filter...)

yeah, the cv is much more impressive on the thin filter mod than with the pcx filter:

Indeed. Have you ever tested the Loxia 35/2 vs CV 35/1.7+5m?
