p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lens for A7R II

Hello all, I am thinking about renting a A7R II to see how I like it. I do not have any Sony lenses...so I will need to rent one of those also. With that, I am asking advice on which one I should choose. I mainly shoot portraits/street photography with my kids. Typically focal lengths I use are anywhere from 50-200 rarely wider or longer. So, I would like to get your suggestions on what might be the best lens to get for my needs. Additionally, I would like the lens to be (price wise) no more than 1200. I don't really want to rent a lens, love it, just to realize it's 2K!! Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance all.

The Zeiss 55mm is a really good performer and well within your price range. I like the rendering of the Loxia 50mm more but manual focus isn't everyone's cup of tea.

A step up would be the Batis 85mm which is also (sort of) in your price range - but it just seems odd to me to start with the tele instead of a standard lens...YMMV, though.

May I suggest a short tele lens with a focus hold button?
Then you can map Eye-AF to the button.
A very convenient way to shoot portraits.

Taken with that lens.

All shot handheld.

I'd go with the FE 50/1.4. Personally, I think it's best lens in Sony's non-GM offerings and the best 50/1.4 from any manufacturer. New prices are a little over your budget, but if you're renting from Lens Rentals and you like the copy, the cost of the lens minus the cost of your rental will likely bring it in range.

If you feel like you want to give the great manual focus aids of mirrorless a work-out, Cosina's got one great all-arounder in the Voigtlander APO-Lanthar 65/2. There's a long thread about it on the board with plenty of samples. A great lens at any distance, which isn't something that can be said about many lenses.

While it's not a wildly popular lens here, I think the G 70-200/4 is worth a look. It's not the highest resolving lens Sony makes, thanks to a little undercorected SA at wider apertures through most of its range. It's not a perfect lens, but an undervalued one, and it does cover most of your desired range in your budget. OSS working in conjunction with SteadyShot is nice, too.

FE 1.8/55. Very fast af. Superb oof rendition with soft bokeh. Sharp wo. It has flaws but is great for portraiture. Sure the 1.4 would be nicer to have but it is significantly more expensive too.

I'd want to rent the 50/1.4, just to see the possibilities. It's supposed to be amazing, and the images I've seen seem to back that up.

The 55/1.8 is no slouch either, and a lot smaller and cheaper.

Just so you know......many love the 55/1.8, but quite a few (including myself) don't care for it. It also has the worst manual focus I've ever seen, if that's important to you.

The Sony 85mm f/1.8 FE offers similar or better performance to the Batis at half the price and in a smaller package.

Batis gives you IS, but you don't need it for an Alpha camera. I have the FE as my sole native system lens and have been pretty pleased with it (I expected the AF to be a little better overall, but I think it's absolutely on par with the Batis I tried out, and a little faster than than 85 f/1.4 GM I tested for a few day).

I agree. I do often use MF on this lens when shooting at night, in near total darkness, and it is appalling, barely useable. I wonder if a software fix could change this?

The OP clearly expressed a preference for 50-200mm focal length and no more than $1200.
It would be nice to hear from the OP again whether the feedback was useful.

The Sony 70-300 zoom comes in at $1,198.00. It would almost cover your range and is very sharp.

I'm a big fan of the 55/1.8, it's not perfect, but for the size and weight it's a great lens.

That's a great lens as well, FE 70-300/4.5-5,6 G OSS, not as fast as an f/2.8 lens though.

The old 55mm is purely an AF lens, in four years I have never used MF, even in EV of 1-2.
I don't much care for it as a device, but it's onside working with you, and the images stack up with the best of my other lenses that cost 2x the going rate of the 55mm.

It's also a near-perfect FL for known people, and not bad for friendly strangers, enough fade to deliver good bokeh, yet icy sharp and strong 'presence' at f2.2-f3.2. I would start there; you may never need a short telephoto. If you do, practice with any good old Sonnar made by Zeiss, 85-90-100mm in focal length ($300-400) or go with the FE 85/1.8 (Sony now at least use metal mounts in their cheap 85mm options). Much longer lenses than that are a can of worms with a fading performance to cost ratio, to match their dismal percentage of overall shots (for most users).

Hello all and thank you for taking the time to respond. After reading the many responses and doing a bit more research -- looks like I may try either the 85 1.8, 55 1.8 or the 90 (leaning more towards the 85). I appreciate all the suggestions, but I think the more budget friendly alternatives are my best bet...for now. Glad too see that the 70-300 has some fans as a nice, long zoom would definitely be in my future.

That 90 looks insanely sharp khaw.

Again, thank you all!!!

Just one more thought, a used 70-200mm f/4 might be something to think about. But the other options are obviously excellent!

Many thanks, I tend to agree. It seems I got a good copy of the FE 90/2.8.
Okay one more from a couple of years ago, taken with A7r.

No more than $1,200 from 50-200mm for me it's the Batis 85/1.8. Very low variation and sharp wide open.
It has better color correction and sharper corners compared to the FE 85/1.8. (which is another great choice btw)
