Thanks for sharing, beautiful shots to say the least. They definitely look better than what I was getting from the lens. Were those cropped at all? I would love to know what sort of post processing you do, maybe that was part of my problem.

They are cropped somewhat. The owl is very minimal crop. Here are the original files for some of the others and one more heavier crop.

I use LR for PP. I do a small bump on clarity, saturation and adjust highlights and shadows. I use LR sharpening by adjusting the masking slider, setting Detail to 100 and Amount to about 40-50. I leave radius alone. Then just export from LR with the output sharpening for screen at High.

Thanks for the additional information, I'm impressed. Maybe it's time I upgrade to the current Photoshop/Lightroom. Whenever I used the lens with the 2x I always had a bit of a lack of contrast and the images looked slightly soft when viewed at full size. If I scaled down the full frame they looked fine after post processing but I don't think I ever got images quite as crisp as yours unless I stopped down some.

Here are a couple of samples that I got with the lens and 2x wide open. They are pretty much full frame scaled down for web viewing from a 7D mk2.

I also shoot mostly wide open with the 400DO with great results with the 2x. I never had to do any adjustments either, strait out of the box results.

Lovely photos. My experience is the same with the Canon TC's.
If shooting full frame cameras you don't have much of a choice. And the extenders work great.
Using crop body's is when I see the image starting to suffer, using extenders.

Yeah, that was going to be my comment, the impact of the 2x might be more visible with high pixel density sensors, e.g. 7D II, 5DSR

I'm very satisfied with my 2x III Extender. It's significantly better than its Mk II predecessor, and it's almost as good at 400mm (on a 200mm lens), as a native 400mm lens.

Here's some threads showing 2x III Extender images and other stuff (... and some 1.4x stuff, too).

Anyone used the 2X III on the 200-400 without the 1.4X internal converter engaged? I have the 2X II, but not particularly pleased with it. Thinking of getting the 2X III if you think it will give me 800 with good quality images. Could not find an example here.
Thanks,
John

Could you try the 1.4x III on the 200-400 with TC ?

Yes. It can be done. But 2.8X combined would almost certainly degrade quality in my opinion. Have not tried that though. If the 2XIII image quality is good without using the internal i.4X, I'll invest in the TC.

John I have used that combo with good results, but I like the 1.4x engaged with a 2nd 1.4x better. The lens stays more versatile. A flip of the switch your at 560mm f 5.6 vs staying at f8 for the entire zoom range. Your at 784mm with both 1.4x in use at f 8. Image quality wise your close with any combo of just the 2x or double 1.4x's. I have not done flight shots with just a 2x but the double 1.4x's works great. I did not really care for the 2x with the 1.4x engaged, it works but not the best way to go. A trick with that is AF with just the 2x then engage the internal 1.4x for some extreme mm's at f 11.

I my opinion just using the 2x defeats the point of this lens if you always want a 800mm. There maybe better combos out there to achieve that.

If I was you I would try the internal 1.4x with a second 1.4x route first, you may like it.

Here is the 2x @ 800mm

Already posted in this thread but this is with the 2x and the internal 1.4x in use @ 907mm

I have lots of shots on my flickr site with the 2 1.4x @ 784mm if interested.

Sounds like I am in the minority and I have been going back and forth with Canon to see if it is my copy, my 600 II or my body that is producing poor results. I have not been happy at all and will await use with another body combo before I pass final judgement. As a result, it sits lonely in my drawer. I am pleased with the 1.4 III and it produced great results.

I use a different 2x (would love to get a Canon MKIII though) on the Sigma 50-500 and in good light, the results were quite good. I would expect the Canon would be better than my Kenko 2x. There is quite a bit of CA in the images on the frame edges.

Of course you can always stack a 1.4 and 2x together too!

I think that would only be equivalent to 2X. You multiply 1.4 by 1.4 which gives you 1.96X, close enough to 2x

The math is wrong. 1.4 would be multiplied with the other 1.4 tc, not added to it. Would yield 1.96x (not sure if the 1.4 is exact, probably rounded, thus 2x) and not 2.8x.

Hope this makes sense, I'm very tired!

I think its fabulous on the series 2 lenses. This from the 300 2.8 IS II earlier tonight.

You're right, it's the product of the two magnification factors. BTW, the "1.4" is actually the square root of 2, and so two 1.4x extenders makes it exactly 2x.

Except the EXIF still only reports to me 784mm with the two 1.4s Makes me kind of sad I'm missing those 16mm....or not

As to the question of the 200-400 I also would recommend using the 1.4 external so you don't give up the flexibility of the built-in. Basically you just change the lens to a 280-784 f/5.6-f/8 lens Vs the 200-560 f/4-f/5.6 lens. I have used my 2xTC on the 200-400 a few times but mostly just to play with 1120mm f/11 no-AF (other than the trick Rob mentioned that works for stationary things).

That suggests it's using a fixed number from eprom, not a calculation. It's like using pi = 3.0; the math is a lot more simple, but the results are incorrect.

If anybody is looking to buy one, Canon has refurbs on right now for 10% off which is $309.59. Looks like only a couple left.
